What's with the costumes?

Although it seems shallow not to delve into the many layers of this rather splendid movie, I must.

Is it just me, or did the company get their wardrobe contents free from 'Heartbeat'? Did they wear tank tops and trenchcoats in the 80s? I wasn't around then, so I could be wrong...

I was regularly wearing a tank-top (black, acrylic) the year this was made. I was 19 at the time.
We used non-digital mini-cassette recorders and 'sliding-top' photocopiers too.
And "The Web" was a song by [prog-rock band] Marillion, sung by a Fish.

And this film is still oh-so relevant today.

Couldn't agree more, the costumes and everything were absolutely spot on. Of course, it isn't a period piece, it was made in 84/85 and waz contemporary. I really enjoyed seeing London as it was back then, cool, clean, busy but not overcrowded, Hungerford Bridge pre-attack of the subhumans who threw two young boys over into the Thames and drowned one, and mostly English - those were the days - let's hope they come again soon.

Having said that, the role of the security services in this movie is all too believable, and strikes terror into me. Any freedoms we enjoy or have enjoyed in the UK have been illusory, and have been eroded away to nothing at this point. Ah well....

[Ahem!] Explain yourself, please?

Watching this again recently, I was struck by the quite stylish dressing in the film. Mr Byrne's jacket, for example, is gorgeous and looks like it was made to measure; we also see him wearing a very nice pair of brogues during the lift scene.

Certainly, some people did dress like this in the eighties (as they still do now) but it was more of a Brideshead/young fogey look and I'm not sure that someone like Nick would have dressed that way. Anoraks, crap haircuts and naff shiney suits were more the favoured dress of journos in those days, if you look at old footage.

Then again, Nick was obviously a bit of a stylish, cultured chap - drove a BMW (before they became the standard wheels for tossers and gangstas)and listens to Pachelbel on the gramophone.

Yeah what a beautiful way to go - Pachelbel's cannon

Looked like a Harris tweed jacket to me. Nice brogues and cords, and all just before the end of Fleet Street.
