I hate Death of a Salesman!

I hated the movie and I really hated the book. It was boring and pointless! The only cool thing was Ben leading Willy to death!

You're 15, hormonal and probably studying this play in school. No wonder you don't like it! That's the problem with education systems all round the world, they try and encourage the students to "enjoy" classics by adding them to their curriculars, but instead make students hate the texts by setting boring, monotonous, over-analytical lessons, followed by obscure, open-ended exam questions. It's why so many dislike Shakespeare!

Give it a few years, become mature and I guarantee you will like this. It is a superb examination of the American Dream and a man's descent into suicidal depression.

My mom who is much much older then me didn't like the book.

reply

First off: it is not a book. It is a play.

Secondly, your mother gave birth to someone who refers to themselves on the internet as "Jedimaster". That explains a lot.

Besides if your mother is older than you she has the wisdom and experience to properly make a distinction about what drama she likes and dislikes. You are 15, you are not old enough to make that distinction.

I AM old enough to have an opinion.

You're old enough to have your own opinion. You aren't old enough to back it up with any evidence, personal or otherwise.

The evidence is I thought it was boring!

That's not evidence. That's an opinion. Back it up.

This post is my opinion!

Well don't post it as fact!

PhantomPhan,
I realize I'm a little late in getting to this discussion, but you're a self-righteous jerk. I'm no kid (in my 30s), and I can tell you that age is not always an indicator of wisdom. A 15-year old can certainly have a very valid opinion and be able to back it up. What kind of a person discounts what someone says just based on his age? Talk about narrow-minded. And you make fun of his username when you're donning the very childish moniker of phantomphan. Kids can always fall back on their age when they act immaturely. What's your excuse?

reply

you and your mother arent stupid
just ignorant

reply

I back it up with the fact that when watching this at school, over half of the class fell asleep from sheer boredom and repetitiveness. I back it up with the fact that Dustin Hoffman speaks unintelligably in this film, and that makes it impossible to understand if you don't have the script available. I think that not speaking so that it is possible to understand what they are saying makes it a bad film.

And I object to the insinuation that age has anything to do with ability to back up an argument. As a wise man once said: "Youth cannot know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if they forget what it was to be young."

PS I am not trying to say that you are an old man.

Really? It is both a book and a play. Do you know what a book is?

reply

this coming from someone who calls himself PhantomPhan222!

but yeah, its a good play allright.

Well, a lot of times I'm doing it from work - Cosmo/Prabhakar Anand comes clean

Are you studying it at school? Some people think that studying a play or any other literature at school destroys it from over-analysing but I'm doing this play for GCSE and I'm loving it! I'm really glad my teacher chose this otherwise I may not have discovered this brilliant play until much much later!
Just try it without prejudice or give it a few years...you might like it then

It all depends on your teacer, really. I usually hate reading anything for school. But I LOVE my AP English teacher (from last year) b/c we never just read it and took tests. We would have many discussions on what was going on, why we thought something was happening, what we thought would happen next, ect. Plus, my teacher always got into w/e part he did (he was Willie) and it makes it even more enjoyable. (He seriously needs to do some community plays or something!)

Sorry, this is just a side note and I don't mean to sound completely ignorant but what's AP English? American Plays? I'm British so I never heard it before!

It means Advanced Placement.

And what does that mean?

Are you talking to me?

If so, Advanced Placement classes are just advanced classes. We do more and harder work. We did a lot more essays in english last year than I would have done if I was in a regular english class.

Im 16 and i think the play and movie are fantastic. There are so many parallels with the characters in the book and members of my family its creepy, and Dustin Hoffman sounds so much like the over the hill neighbors i have in here in NY, perfect accent. The story itself is a good one, regardless of being able to relate to it, I just find reading plays in school really irritating, I actually cut class to read it myself, so i don't have to hear a girl reading for Willy in a monotone voice the whole time. And for whoever it was going on about age meaning opinions can't be backed up? go *beep* yourself, I can't help that i wasn't born earlier.

An advanced placement course is a college level course that is offered to high school students. Getting a passing grade will earn the student college credit at many American universities, and getting the highest grade will earn credit at ANY American university.

If you haven't seen "Stand and Deliver", I highly recommend it. It is about an inner-city schoolteacher who teaches AP calculus.

Always remember that YOU are unique. Just like everyone else.

reply

"It means Advanced Placement."
"And what does that mean?"

It's kind of self-explanatory, Miss Chocolate.

reply

It's really kind of not. Because over here, a placement is a temporary job with a company that someone takes a trial run, firstly to see if they like the company, and secondly to see if the company likes them.

Just twat him with the bonsai mountain!

Ah, okay. I see now.

Cool? You're calling the defeat of the common man by society cool? You liked the fact that Ben encouraged Willy to commit suicide? Good God, I hope you don't treat depressed and suicidal friends that way.

On some level, I can agree with you about the boring part. Maybe because my English teacher just sucked the book dry with all the assignments, but I did not enjoy reading the book.

On the other hand, I don't see how you can call it pointless. The play contains some very frightening truths about society, and Arthur Miller meant to open our eyes with his play. Did your teacher not do a good job of explaining the themes and motifs in the play? Or were you just too caught up with Star Wars to realize that plays without lightsabers and the Force don't necessarily mean they're boring?

reply

Yah I really didnt like the film...don't get me wrong i thought it was well acted but it really wasn't my type of movie...It was boring monotonous and really I dont care about the american dream...cause I'm not american lol but in all seriousness I respect the people who like it its there opinion, I myself do not and just because I am a teenager dont give me the when u mature crap. Its simply not an engrossing story, no happiness, no excitment, and willie is truly a horrible guy buut dustin hoffman did really good acting job

reply

Anyone else find it funny that the person who insisted that the original poster was young, naive and speaking from opinion completely unsupported by fact had a signature about stopping Heath Ledger from 'destroying' the Joker, a role that was much acclaimed and garnered him a posthumous Oscar? Talk about opinion with no strong basis in reality that was actually and completely proven wrong.
