Shay Cunliffe--Costume Designer

Maybe you've noticed that throughout the movie, the four principal characters, Joyce, Andy, Turtle, and Daryl, are given an extensively varied wardrobe, especially Daryl. I thought the costumes gave the film a special kind of production value.

Those characters seemed to have a different outfit for each scene, or episode. The costume designer, Shay Cunliffe, was given a very busy assignment.

In the case of Daryl, I think I can see some of the artistic thinking that went into matching costume to scene. For example, when he's flying on the first jet, the business jet, he's wearing sky-blue shirt, blue jeans, and white jacket with blue trim. The jacket actually matched the plane, which was white with blue trim.

In the climactic chase and flight scenes, he's wearing dark clothing, for stealth at night, plus there is red trim showing out of his dark windbreaker, red being symbolic of danger.

His school outfit made him stand out from other kids. He was the only boy wearing shorts (and short shorts at that), and his polo shirt had elaborate workmanship, and looked expensive. You could understand that girl flirting with him.
I also noticed his socks were light grey matching the shorts and shirt torso, but with dark green stripes, a primary hue-contrast to the dark red trim of the shirt. There is also a deep blue backpack, which completes the RGB color primaries. Maybe that's part of the rationale--I personally detect a certain vibrancy in that scheme. Socks matching to shorts and tops is tricky, controversial subject, according to my research, but I'll trust that Shay C. had good fashion sense behind these choices.

Note, the shirt: https://www.etsy.com/listing/109646547/mccalls-6953-1980s-mens-pullove r-shirt?ref=market
I couldn't find an example in vintage, and there's no logo, so I think it's custom made.

Joyce wears a wide variety of mostly prints and some solids. But when she's in the big computer room, she's wearing a simple, solid plum-red top that is almost a perfect match for the background colors in the cubicle walls and large computer equipment. That could not be a coincidence.

(Yes, this stuff is actually interesting to some of us.)

I'm just wondering how of the costuming much was off the shelf, and how much designed. I don't know that much about the costume design job. But I know from personal experience, it's not easy to find really good looking, appropriate clothes by store shopping. So even that part of the job is big challenge to do for four people, and maybe a dozen outfits each.

Shay Cunliffe is still working, BTW, and is apparently in demand. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0192200/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr9
