Barret Oliver is underrated in this film.

In my opinion, Barret Oliver's performance in this film is superb. Daryl is a Robot-but he was programmed to exhibit certain human traits. Barret had a tough job here because he had to be both human and man made-or put in another way-machine and human. He played it very well. I don't think another child actor could have played it as well as Barret did. Maybe Ricky Schroder could have-if it was made 5 years before!
