setting

can anyone tell please tell me where this film is set?

reply

In the movie, on the side of the van Daryl is being driven to the center in, we see "Barkenton Childcare facility." Also, when Lamb and Stewart recover Daryl from the Richardsons there is a sign that says, "Leaving Barkenton."

Barkenton is a fictional town set in the North Carolina area.

I'm sure it's set filmed in Florida but set somewhere up north.

Was I the only one watching the map when Daryl was flying the Blackbird? He explodes over the coast of South Carolina. Also, the license plates on the Andy's car is South Carolina.

My question is, what is used for the establishing shot of the lab? Does the building still exist somewhere?

reply

1)turtle's and daryl's adoptive parents houses are homes in maitland florida
2)the lake scenes are around small lake near downtown orlando (the area has been completely changed becouse growth of homes and buisnesses serounding the lake.
3)the highway chase is the interstate 408 at bumby ave.
4)one of the airfields scenes is eather the executive airport or international airport i havent seen the film in a very long time so i cant remember which airport they used off the top of my head

i think the lab was part of the old navel testing and research center here in orlando which is equally now gone to make way for homes near downtown orlando

but yes the film is set in a fictional town in south carolina

reply

My guess is the lab was at Pinewood Studios, UK.

Do you know where the ATM scene was? I've tentatively ID it as 109 E. Lyman Ave., Winter Park, FL.
Do you know where the baseball field was?

The little city hall that the elderly man brings him to at the beginning, is in Dillsboro, NC. The exact location is right next to Bradley's General Store, which is at 52 Front Street.

The little building is still there, and the stone building next to it (Bradley's GS) has been renovated.
The playground and fence are gone. There is a huge tree in place of the playground. It must have grown in the meantime.
The white house just beyond that area is still there.

You can see it all on Google Earth Street View.

I've been to Dillsboro many times, and have visited the locations from The Fugitive, but I never knew that D.A.R.Y.L. was filmed there.

reply

I wonder how many Dillsburians are aware of it.

Another found site: the "Leaving Barkenton" sign is in Eustis, FL, on the FL 19 highway, also named N. Bay St., near East Laurel Oak Dr. This is the scene where Daryl is being driven by his claimed parents to an airport.
28°51'51.45" N 81°41'11.96" W

And yet another possible find: 109 E. Lyman Ave., Winter Park, FL. This is the address of "The Hutch Coffee Shop" seen in the ATM scene. There would have been renovations, but it's a similar business area, with streets about as wide. This one I am not yet updating in the Filming Locations, because I'm not sure enough.
(Winter Park, FL subsequently verified, although 103 E Lyman Ave would be closer.
