Such a deliciously homoerotic movie!

I remember it very fondly for that reason, even if I'm totally over Arnold these days.

How is homoerotic?

reply

😂

Seriously?!

reply

Have you SEEN it? Including the scenes with the villain guy?

reply

The villain had strange attire but I never picked up on any gay subtext. If you had said this about Predator, it would be somewhat understandable but there is barely any interaction between Matrix and Bennett until the end of the movie.

reply

just gay men trying to find their kind in any & every form of media known to man to validate their place in society

reply

Sad, but true.

reply

Men have a one track mind but gays are on the wrong track so you have to cut them slack accordingly.

reply

My toughts exactly gay people want to see gay context every where this movie is not homoerotic in any way but make a movie with two guys fighthing and gay people are going to see nothing but gay subtext even when is only in their minds

Just a silly and over the top action movie

The dude had a moustache, was wearing leather pants and had some weird fishnet vest on. What more are you looking for?

reply

I don´t really look for such things which is probably why I did not see it.

reply

Did he kiss a dude?

reply

COMMANDO IS AWESOME...GAYNESS IS FINE.

reply

I am not gay and I always have had some problem with how homoerotic this movie is.
It's embarassing to watch and to like it because of that.

They put in a scene with that couple fucking in the hotel and she had some nice rack, but other than that, it's gayer than Big Gay Al.

My guess is that you're referring to the close-ups of Arnie's muscles and his getting into a canoe with nothing but his swimmimg trunks on. Bennet also resembled Freddy Mercury for some reason...

Unintenional homoeroticism was common in macho action films of the 80's - with the camera lavishing over these "perfect" male specimen action-stars. Hell, it's common in bodybuilding and sport too.

The beach-volleyball scene in Top-Gun is a great example of 80's action- homoeroticism.

The point of the OP seems to have gone over the head of some people - as if sub-text doesn't exist, and Matrix and Bennet had to be making out for the movie to be homoerotic.

Great post.

It's funny when men strut their sexuality in the form of manliness the way women would in their own expressions, both which is largely cultural. It's possible to find something attractive to someone of the same sex without being attracted to the person or people directly, even if the implications of same-sex attraction are still there.

Well, I was also referring to the final confrontation, where Arnold puts the Mercery-esque villain off balance by saying "You want me", and the villain starts drooling with lust.

This is one 80s action film where at least some of the homoeroticism is intentional.

reply

" deliciously homoerotic"....THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS POST HAS CRACKED ME UP.

reply

Hahaa yes good catch. Arnie was also daring Bennet to penetrate him with his knife: "Don't you want to stick it in?" or something to that effect...

reply

Of course it was. I put this in one of the other threads here:-

Note the metaphorical exploration of this at the end when Matrix penetrates Bennett with his thick piping - if you look closely at Bennett's face you can clearly see a hint of the pleasure he derives from fully taking Matrix's weapon.

Bennett was clearly a man in love with Matrix and hurt by being removed from his life after their "glory days".

It's been awhile since I last saw this film, but if I'm remembering correctly, the main villain, Bennett, is the only character who brandishes a pistol on screen. Everyone else is either using higher military-grade weaponry or rifles of some kind.

If you've seen 'The Boondock Saints' movies, the brothers joke about how their takedown schemes resemble action movies. In the sequel, they laugh at their Mexican cronie's expense due to the way his hand gun looks!

Considering this example in relating it to the above, perhaps this is yet another homoerotic subtext that has graced our screens.

Lastly, there's something else I remember from a sitcom starring Terry Crews titled 'Are We There Yet'. His daughter thinks she has a relationship with a boy who plays for the school's football team. Before the two of them head out to town together, she dolls herself up to impress the guy, to which he says upon seeing how nice she looks, "That dress looks beautiful on you." They then head out and everything seems to be going fine.

That is, until afterwards the mother points out to the father (played by Terry Crews) that the boy who just left is gay. Crews's character, puzzled, asks his wife, "How do you know?" She replies back, "He told our daughter, 'That dress looks beautiful on you', not 'You look beautiful in that dress'. " I myself had to do a double take at the statement and I'm curious to know what you or anyone else may think about this. I can see the logic in it.
