Celie had plenty of times to leave Mr. if she wanted to.

I think Celie loved being whooped by Albert because if she really wanted to leave she could gone long before Shug got there.

And go where?

reply

I rather go anywhere instead of being beating. It's not like she was in a gated prison.

She shoulda left with her sister!! I couldn't understand why she was just sitting on the porch. I don't even think Celie and Mr were actually married. were they??

reply

"I never asked you for anything, not even your sorry-ass hand in marriage!" I'm certain that they were.

Ouch, mama that was my ear!

Celie wasn’t just abused, she “did what she was told”, even if it meant a life of hell. She didn’t know any better, finding solace -- and freedom -- only in God. It’s not until years later, upon meeting Shug, she tastes freedom -- a freedom of spirit anyway -- and finally tries to escape.

In the old days slaves out numbered their masters by 10 to 1
yet they never tried running or beating the hell out of him...

Celie was fear broken...like them...
and wouldn't dream of trying to run.

Read up on the psychology of an abuse victim and their abusers. There's your answer.

reply

Well clearly you have never been a victim of abuse, otherwise you would understand why.

I guarantee you she did not enjoy being whooped! Why do some people say that about women in abusive relationships? I mean, really!
