Favorite Line???

I really liked this movie, does anyone have a favorite line or scene from the movie??? :)Thanks.

reply

My favorite line is "Maybe they'll let you sweep out the back of the caboose!"

reply

Yeah, I thought that was a classic line too. :)

reply

"You sho is ugly!"

reply

Haha, that was good line. Thanks for posting. :)

I have a couple of favorites:

Sophia: "All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my uncles. I had to fight my brothers. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men, but I ain't never thought I'd have to fight in my own house! I loves Harpo, Miss Celie. God knows I do. But I'd kill him dead 'fo I let him beat me. "

Celie: "I'm poor, black, I might even be ugly, but dear God, I'm here. I'm here."

Sophia: "Sat in that jail, I sat in that jail til I felt like I's bout to rot to death. I know what it like to wanna go somewhere and cain't. I know what it like to wanna sing... and have it beat out 'ya. I want to thank you, Miss Celie, fo evrything you done for me. I 'members that day in the store with Miss Millie - I's feelin' real down. I's feelin' mighty low. And when I seed you - I know'd they is a God. I know'd they is a God."

Celie: "Till you do right by me, everything you even think about gonna' fail."

“No man is worth your tears, but once you find one that is, he won't make you cry.”

I really like those lines! :) What did you think of the movie and who was your fav. character???

reply

Celie: "Everything you done to me, already done to you." The way she points at him and says that just gives me chills.

Sophia: "You'd better bash Mister's head in and think about Heaven later!" That's probably not an exact quote, but one that I like.

Nearly everything that Old Mister says. His delivery is hilarious no matter what he's saying.

Celie's entire speech to Mister at the dinner table before she leaves with Shug.

Where does your bottom quote come from? The movie?

Old Mister was funny as hell. I loved it when he said, "Miss Celie, you has my sympathy. Ain't many women what would let they husband's ho lay up in they house."

reply

**SPOILER**

In the two-disc DVD Oprah is quoted as saying that in the scene where she comes alive at the dinner table was not scripted. I loved that scene and if I didn't know it's hard to tell that it wasn't planned.

There's so many other quotes that I just can't name them all. But to name a few:

Shug Avery - "I's married now..I said I's married now!"

Mister - ..."You're Black you're ugly you're a women....

Mister - What's gotten into you..the older you get the slower you get the dumber you get. I didn't come out here for you to keep me waiting now get the molasses out your a#% and do me right now!!

Celie - "Hold your head back" (when giving Mister a shave her expression walking towards him was priceless)

Sophia - "Ah hush up you ole fool(to Mister's father)..always meddling in other people's business. (laugh) Sophia home now..so just hush up!

This is the kind of movie I can watch over and over again. I always look at it in a different retrospect each time. It's such an inspirational film that it deserved so much more attention than what it received. Not surprised it was snubbed at the oscars. Hollywood just can't accept exceptional film achievements with an all-Black cast.

Most of my favorites have already been posted. Here are a few, that are still good.

When finding the naked photos, money and Nettie's letters. Shug says something like: These don't even look like me. Damn that Albert.

Something like that. LOL

When Shug tells her father, that she understands, that he cannot talk to her.

Old Mr.: I guess I just raised you wrong.

Took a while to figure that out. There's still so many more good scenes.

"You sho is ugly!"

It's the way Shug laughs after that line that cracks me up everytime!

reply

Cause your daddy aint nothing but some dead horse s***!!

caboose, whoo my friends & i used to roll off of that line & keep winding it back.& the way the 2 mr.s crack up after they say it. to me that's the funniest line in the movie.

fried ice cream is a reality

reply

"Us two married ladies now. Us two married ladies now and HUNGRY! Ooh, what us got to eat?" -- classic

"I's married now!! I say I's married now." -- that is how i told everyone i got married after I eloped. It is a classic like every line in this movie.

Your daughter misbehaves -- "Beat her".

Kids slow on the way out in the morning -- "Time to go Missa Albert" (my son HATES that, been wanting to know who Albert is for years)

Husband annoys you -- "Time for me to get away from you and into creation and your dead body be just the welcome mat I need"

You can't beat that.

I absolutely loved the movie. I, usually, can't sit still while I'm watching a movie, but this entraced me for over two hours. As for my favorite character, I would have to say Sophia. I loved her view on life. "She didn't take nothing from no one." (Sorry, for my use of bad grammer) Not from her husband nor the white folks (no offense).

“No man is worth your tears, but once you find one that is, he won't make you cry.”

Sophia was a cool character, but I really liked Celie and Shug! :)

reply

Yeah, those were good! :)

reply

I don't know if this was in the movie or not, but i'm currently reading the book (which is fantastic btw) and one line that stuck out to me is when Celie says "write to me" and Nettie replies "nothing but death could keep me from it!"

How can we connect in an age where strangers, landlords, lovers, your own blood cells betray?

reply

Sophia-"you told happo to beat me" I always loved that line. Its not what she says is how she said it.

What you say to a lazy man who is asking you to do stuff for him..."Is dey somethin the matter wid you?"

reply

"I's married now!! I's married now!!" That's how I told everyone too at my wedding reception!! HAHA!

I loved it when Miss Millie asked Sophia if she wanted to be her maid:

"I said, Hay-ull No!"

"Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."

reply

My favorite is where Celie says to Mister: "Nettie and my kids be comin' home soon, and when they get here we gonna' set around and whip your ass". I love it!

I liked the scene where Celie is sweeping and she picks up the torn piece of paper with "sky" written on it from years before when Nettie was teaching her to read and write. I thought it was so deveastating and sad when she said while looking out the rainy window at Albert getting the mail from the mailman "She say she write, but she never write. She say nothing but death can keep her from it, maybe she dead." and then a tear rolls down her cheek. When I first saw that I was about ready to bawl my eyes out!

I liked the scene where Sofia confronts Celie about her telling Harpo to beat her (somebody quoted it before.)

Shug to Celie "You 'sho is ugly!"

I love the whole "Sistah" song.

The whole movie is just amazing. To me, this is one of those movies that you can watch over and over and never grow tired of it. It's a universal story that anybody can relate to, black or white, man or woman...that's why I love it so much. Not to mention the amazing jobs done by the entire cast and crew to make this film what it is...a masterpiece.

The film is so underrated though...whenever I see the review of it in critic's books in a book store it always has "3 out of 4 stars" and I always flip to Forrest Gump just to see what they rate that and it's always "4 out of 4."

Forrest Gump is good and all but is nowhere near The Color Purple... but it doesn't matter to me what other critics think, The Color Purple will always be my favorite film of all time.

My favourite is just after the fantastic confrontation scene at the dinner table, when Celie tells Albert:
"'Til you do right by me, everything you even think about gonna crumble!" and is dramatically dragged away by Shug. Then Grady sticks his head around the door frame and says brightly: "Sho' was nice meeting all of y'all!"

I love that.

I don't understand the question, and I won't respond to it.

reply

I just rented the Color Purple the other day and watched the whole movie. I think it is one of Steven Spielberg's greatest films. I would have to say that my favorite scene in The Color Purple is the confrotation between Sophia and Squeak in Harpo's music joint. It is the scene where Sophia and Squeak are fighting over Harpo. Shug Avery had been performing a few songs in the joint. Squeak and Sophia continue to bicker and the Squeak slaps Sohpia. The musicians in the joint had been playing but they stop at that point and then you see Sophia glare at Squeak. There is like dead silence for about a minute and then one of the musicians in the joint is like, "Oops, gotta go," and then he grabs his instrument and runs out of there. Normally a line like that may not be funny but it was just the way he said it and his body language when he delievered the line. He runs out of there as fast as his legs can carry him and he is probably thinking I am not going to get in the middle of a chick fight or something. Either way, I have always found that scene hilarious especially when the fighting breaks out after that.

"Sofia home now. Pass me those peas.!"

Get's me all the time. Still can believe Anjelica Huston got the Oscar over Oprah Winfrey!

My favorite was the line before that:

"This life be over soon. Heaven last always"

I love ALL the quotes above.

PLEASE don't forget when Old Mista spoke of a newly awakened Sophia: Dear God. The dead has arisen.

I loved when the mayor's wife went from loving Sophia's kids to "want to come be my maid?" What did THAT match? It was the perfect set up for the real stellar quote. "HELL NO." I loved how Sophia didn't hesitate to repeat what she said - twice.

Sophia was my favorite character. In those times, it took ALOT of courage for a black woman to stand up to men AND white people the way she did. It wasn't even courage, it was just all she knew. I guess from all that fighting she did as a "girl chile..."

I also loved how the camera ALWAYS zoomed in on her fist. In a way, it made you feel like you personally knew her. As soon as someone hit her, you automatically - like the characters surrounding her - knew it was an "awwwwwww s*@%" moment...

I loved the quote: Good night ya'll. This was the old man near Squeaks and Sophia pre-punch. Homie KNEW what was coming and I figured he knew - as slow as he moved - that it was time to roll while he had a chance before Sophia would through a punch.

When the kids are marching past Shug and she asks where's Celie?
"At home, fixin to shave Mister".

The church scene with Shug and her father :
"See daddy, sinners have soul too".

When Celie asks about any more letters coming for her :
Mister: "Could be, could be not. Who's to say?"

And all the other ones that were mentioned.
