When the seniors mob the pool, why would they smash the cocoons? Those things were frightening looking...and they didn't even know WHAT they were!

Two of the men were smashing one of them against the side of the pool, when Walter walked in and screamed at them "PUT DOWN THE COCOON!"

They were light and hollow, like giant eggs. What else do you do to eggs but crack them open and see what's inside?

Human curiosity. On of the old folks probably discovered these things sounded hollow when knocking on them. They just wanted to see what was inside.

They were jazzed up on youth juice and behaving like teenage jackasses. Then they all stood there with dumbfounded looks when Walter yelled at them.

Those old people were all miserable because of their age, once they got a taste of youth, they reverted back to ignorant youngsters, even if just for a moment.
