Do You Think "Clue" is More 1) Scary; or 2) Funny?

I think it's scarier than it is funny. It's funny, but for me, the light-heartedness somehow makes the movie scarier. Can't explain this, except perhaps that the constant high spirits turns the mansion into a madhouse. But...no, not a madhouse, just a place where someone really very dangerous is very very good at hiding the fact they're a killer (or killers).

?????

It's not remotely scary.

It's a murder mystery so it's a wee bit scary.

Was slapping together a list of funny/scary movies. Humor can soften the horror & make it more palatable. It's an interesting balancing act. Too much horror destroys the comedy. Too much comedy destroys the horror.

But I don't want to include movies which rely heavily on cheesy special effects for humor, like most of Troma. Not that there's anything wrong with Troma. Just that their brand of horror is so over the top that it undermines the horror. So I think I appreciate what the OP is getting at.

I ultimately chose against Clue because it's just not scary enough. I did include another Tim Curry movie: Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Exactly why the producers didn't include the legendary fourth ending. But also the reason why I think Clue is scarier than it is funny. Without the comedy, it wouldn't be nearly as scary, because the comedy (to me at least) is a way all the characters put on a front and also conceal their murderous intentions.

"It's a murder mystery so it's a wee bit scary."

So your premise is that designation or genre automatically creates fear? Come on.

Funny for me :)

But even with it being mostly a comedy, them searching the house for a killer in the dark and the music added some suspense for me when I was younger.

I never found it scary. But last year I watched it with my 9 year old niece (who just turned 10 last month) and she complained it was too scary.

reply

I've loved this movie since I was a kid and never considered it remotely scary.

So funny. The only one not funny is col. Mustard. Tim curry is perfect 😂

reply

You didn't think it was funny when Colonel Mustard says he lost his mommy and daddy? And you didn't find it funny when he says, "I can't take anymore scares!" and the Chandeler falls behind him and he gasps and sits down?

reply

No I don't think he is funny at all. All the rest were brilliant.

Funny.

reply

Funny....but it has a great scary atmosphere...the colors, the wardrobes, the house. Perfect 80s .

reply

It's just funny
