Rahway Prison

I noticed that Stephen King did his homework, when Mr Cressner talks to Mr Morris about doing time in Rahway Prison. There was a Rahway Prison at the time. One can see it in the Stallone film "Lock Up". The name of the prison has changed since then--it is now known as East Jersey State Prison. The citizens of Rahway, NJ did not like having their town's name associated with a prison and complained to the NJ Department of Corrections. Not exactly good for business or having families with young children move in. I used to live in NJ back then, and the phrase "going to Rahway" was spoken with dread. When one mentioned Rahway, most people right away thought of the prison. In fact, most prisons in the US don't have their names tied to a municipality for that same reason.

I've passed that prison plenty of times, my job is the next town over and I don't live far from Rahway either. I've never seen Lock Up, but, I've heard one of Stallone's movies was briefly filmed there.

I live in New Jersey myself and about 25 years ago my class went to scared straight at Rahway prison. I also picked up on it when he mentioned doing time in Rahway and thought the same thing that they got the name of the prison right, being that the story took place in Atlantic City.
