Did They Actually Shock a Cat?

I've always loved this movie, but the scene where the cat is placed in the electric shock room always bothered me. Did they actually zap the cat with electric shocks to get it to jump? It certainly looked real. I'm not sure animal safety standards were as tight when this film was made as they are today. The fact that the cat is the real hero of this film is awesome, but I feel guilty watching if one of the feline actors was abused.

From the commentary I believe him saying it was air cans blowing upwards under the grate.

I don't like it when the poor cat is trying to cross the road and all the cars are rushing past. It looks genuinely scared.

PETA would never allow the cat to be hurt.

Tell that to the 11 dead cats from the set of Milo and Otis!
