Was this a flop?

Considering it cost ten million to make and only grossed over 3 million. I know this movie is somewhat of a cult classic.

yes it was.

I remember seeing this when it came out (I was about 18 at the time), and being very unimpressed with this, as I thought I was going to see a Gothic Horror Film... And all I came away with was some period drama/love story. I've since found the DVD @ Big Lots for 3 bucks... And I just finished watching it today. NOW I see the beauty in this film. I would recommend the film for anyone… Just don't think you'll be watching a horror film.

Yes, it was. Also the critics had panned it. But you know, it really has aged quite well!

I only watched it for the first time today and I like it alot too and may invest in a DVD, I'm disappointed to hear that it flopped. It's really an interesting and well written twist on the whole Bride of Frankenstein genre and deserved much more credit than it has gotten, and I love the ending!

My response:

yeah, but the great thing about DVD and the other formats is that it gives films a chance to find an audience. I'd bet more people saw "The Bride" on VHS and DVD than the entire theatrical run.

The same thing happened to John Carpenter's The Thing, it totally bombed in the theaters because ET came out at the same time but later made up for it and then some later, and is now considered a landmark film.
