Best 80s High School movies?

This has to be number one

reply

Maybe. But is there much competition here?

There’s also Lucas.

Does Ferris bueler count as a teenage flick? What about Stand and Deliver?

Sixteen Candles
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

During COVID I binge almost every teen movie (above a certain rating), the majority from the 80's. The best ones are in the list, others were not so good and I left them out.

Some really surprised me how good they were like Just One of the Boys, Sure Thing and Can't Buy Me Love, and other bigger names disappointed.

Did you do "My Science Project" ?

I didnt do that one. i'll have to check it out. Did Real Genius though, liked that one.

i thought real genius was a college movie ?

I love this one, but Reckless (with Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah) was always my favorite.

I never liked this movie, and I can’t quite put my finger on why, specifically. Part of it is...I’m sick as shit of all the lame quotes from this film. Didn’t like the tone...the setting or the characters. And frankly.... most of those actors ring flat for me as well. Sorry to be such a negative Nancy. Really hated Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles as well....and I was a high schooler in the 80’s. Usually I like nostalgia films that take me back to my youth....but these films just feel dated and lame....and none of the actors appeal to me. For my money, Fast Times at Ridgemont High gets it right, hands down.

Saying something is dated is not a good criticism. Of course movies made in the 80's are dated. Still doesn't make them bad.

reply

That's a fair point. I guess I more mean.....there's "good" dated, and "bad" dated. Good dated makes you enjoy the nostalgia, and even though it's dated, it loses nothing upon current views and makes you feel good.

"Good" dated from the 80's: Miami Vice....The Karate Kid......A-Ha......jeans jackets....

"Bad" dated from the 80's: Weird Science.....any music w/ synthesizers....Thomas Dolby....big hair...leg warmers....wrap-around sunglasses.....vans sneakers.....ALF....Who's the Boss....stone washed jeans....Human League....

LOL, of course these are just personal opinions.

I still don't think that The Breakfast Club is dated at all. A lot of the characters could easily fit into today's society. Sure the clothing could be a little off, but for the most part, with just a little tweaking, these characters aren't that different from high school kids today.

reply

Totally agree. Always thought this was really over-rated and corny.

There’s no such thing as a good high school movie from any era.

reply

I definitely put Summer School in that list.
