What do you think Vernon was like when he was in school?

Bully himself?

I'm betting he was probably just like Johnny from the Karate Kid (but didn't know karate).

reply

Nah, he'd have been more of a boffin like Brian, with a bit of the social/popularity thing that Claire has. Probably got bullied a bit, but that's it. The rest is arrogance and ignorance from having done so well for himself, in his opinion.

I bet when Vernon was in high school he was a honor roll student, played sports well enough to make the varsity team but was not in the jock clique and while not a physical bully he was a verbal bully. I doubt he ever beat anyone up, but he was the kid who would make kids cry by telling them they were stupid, ugly, dressed funny, etc. He probably knew most people's sensitive spots and would tee off on them.

reply

well he keeps on complaining how 'in control' the kids seem to be/think they are in this... LOL, I wish he could see kids today!

he was probably like Wally Cleaver. obedient, never really did anything really wrong and expects everyone else to behave likewise.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

My guess is he was one of the school goodie-goodies. Always on time, always paid attention, got his assignments in on time, if not early.

He was probably a school patrol also, and enjoyed getting people in trouble.

Something tells me he was a combination of all 5 in that room.

He was into sports but probably wasn't the star.
He was smart but not a true brainer but probably focused on his homework.
His parents had some money to afford to send him to university
He was a bit of a loner because he didn't belong to any group
He may have also been a sh*t disturber like Bender and got himself into a lot of trouble.

However if I were to choose, he was like Bender.

The big shot tough guy who thought he can do no wrong but ended up in detention a lot. He had a teacher like Vernon who tried to encourage him and told him he's capable of doing so much more.

So he listened and went to university to become a teacher like his mentor.

Agree with this. The conversation he had with Carl the janitor made me feel like he had a little bit of all those types in him and over time had forgotten where he came from
