Were there cliques when you went to high school?

I go to high school now, and I can tell you cliques do not exist anymore.

reply

Maybe not at yours... but they will always exist, in schools and every other walk of life. Human nature.

reply

absolutely. I was class of 1982, this was a very accurate dipiction.

reply

Class of '84!

I find it hard to believe they don't exist. You must go to a very unique high school.

Are there nerds who get picked on? Do the popular kids hang out with them?

"Bltch, what you DON'T know about me -- I can just about squeeze into the Grand xxxxing Canyon!"

They kind of existed in my school, but we weren't as divided.

I was in high school when this movie came out.

Yes, definitely yes, cliques existed at my school.

All these years later I can see flaws in this movie but back then I thought it was perfect. It spoke to me.

I went through my share of phases back then. At the start of high school I was more like the brain but then I wanted to be popular so I tried to be a jock. Failing at that I excited high school angry like the criminal.

So, I spent time with the nerds, the athletes and finally the burnouts.

I don't believe your high school is very representative, but that would be a bummer if there weren't cliques. That was a really fun part - I hung out with alot of different ones. I graduated mid '80s.

reply

Yes, there were. Similar to the ones in this film, too. I also have teenaged kids and young adult kids, and, yes, there are cliques. Forming strata of society is completely normal human behaviour. It would have to be an extraordinary school with a pretty unusual culture to be missing that.

reply

Cliques are just another representation of the class system.

At my high school (over a decade ago) it was just the same. Lots more emo/indie kids though. A lot of educated athletes as well. Not many rich kids.

reply

Of course there were cliques. I really didn't hang with any of them, I basically hated them all. I was John and Allison's love child gone back in time to the 70s.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

sorry - I saw a lot of myself in both John Bender and Allison. I was in high school in the 70s. I basically couldn't have been bothered with much when I was in school. I had scoliosis in those days and was pretty heavily bullied, so...my heart wasn't really in it.
