It's what is known as black comedy- dark in it's themes but still manages to pull off awkward and ironic humour.

To give an example, the scene where the police burst in and violently arrest Buttle frightening his family out of their wits... and then some bowler-hatted bureaucrat with a plum voice gives his wife the receipt. Frightening, yes, but also darkly comic.

It's like Pulp Fiction or Fight Club. Dark in what it says and even some content, but it has that comedic edge to where it can also be classified as a comedy. IMDb obviously doesn't know this fact a lot of the time.

Son of a bitch, I'm sick of these dolphins.

“We set people up to laugh, and they start the laughter, then they realize, ‘that isn’t funny.’ . . . We raise them to heights of laughter, and then say, ‘uh-uh, not funny. This is terrifying.’ . . . And a lot of people resent that. . . . A lot of the audience hate it, because they don’t want to be played with that way” (Gilliam, director’s commentary).

Thought you might find this interesting, because it IS a scary movie.
