Why make a movie like this?

This film is an easy point made complicated. Why make this film? It does not contribute with anything new! This film is for the average.

Hidden messages.. yes, but plain simple (didn't you see all).

I would rather see Armageddon one more time.

Please.. this was a plain stupid film.

A lot of effects ... yes. A lot of feeling.. But anyone that has read 2 pages of Kafka sees that this is just 2 pages of Kafka.

I do not believe you, or anyone. I hate having my feet on the ground. I like to fly paraglider :-)

I'll answer your question with another question

Why make a thread like this?

reply

Damn, you beat me to it!

The champagne had died. So it goes.

reply

Why make a movie ever? Stories are just stories aren't they? Why bother hiring actors and production companies just to tell some dumb story? When I was a kid I was taught in class that there was no such thing as a stupid question... I think my teachers lied to me.

reply

Brazil is one of the finest movies ever made.

reply

i wouldnt go so far as to say that it is one of the finest movies ever, but it is great.

reply

So #248 isn't one of the best? I'm pretty sure that 248 out of maybe 500,000 qualifies it as one of the best.

So you are the spokesperson for what is good and bad? and everyone that votes is wrong? I hate pretentious morons like yourself who think that they have a higher intelligence or more refined taste because they favour a more select group of films. Get over yourself, if people like it, it's good.

reply

What if he's saying it's a joke because taste is entirely subjective? What if he's the opposite of pretentious? What if he's actually extremely humble and modest, far more so than even you? His comment was very brief. You're making assumptions, and you're making a big deal out of it based on them. Remember and consider: You filled in the blanks on his comment using your mind, and your mind alone. Don't be so quick to say you hate someone. At least ask for confirmation before you unleash your fury.

To entertain and kick ya in the ass.

As for Armegeddon then I simply lack the attention span to watch a trailer that lasts nearly three hours. Especially as it´s also utterly stupid.

Good one, ha!

Sort of like the "trailer" for 2012.

EDITED: Urp, here's the official trailer site:

Watching this, I just wonder "how much money did that cost!?!?"

Why make a film? why paint a picture? why write a book? Why make music? Why do we bother to entertain ourselves? Because we are human and boredom is a highly undesirable thing for the human mind because we are intelligent beings and we need stimulation. There, i said it.

To trouble simple and unchallenged minds such as yours. (honestly, you set yourself up for that one)

You're selling it completely short if all you take away is the readily apparent messages about how mindless capitalism erodes the humanity of it's participants.

There such rich commentary on politics, society, and emotions if you have the patience and mindset to read into it.

Excellently said, my friend. You clearly are an intelligent thinker.

Some people think they are intelligent and like to watch "intelligent" movies, and afterwards think some brave new thoughts.

Plato was ironic and played a joke on people, he tried to make a point but the public thought it was serious philosophy.. Don't be fooled by language, choice of words and odd old fashion VR.

So this movie didn't add anything, it was just tragic ... and for some reason that is attractive to some viewers.

Armageddon is just plain simple, has a lot of impossible scenes and a lot of just about everything that anyone can understand, and is simply entertaining. That dont imply that you should think that way.

Brazil tries to enlighten the dumb, but fails. Other people sees the point that they already knew, and that is not adding anything. Go watch some BBCfour/documentary instead.

(and now i'll probably get a lot of words thrown at me)

I can think of something else that is just plain simple, and not in a good way.

Troxx i love this film but what i love more is the fact you've made all these pretencious intelectual stuck up twats look like the idiots they are, i like the film because it's typical Gillium and python style humour x

See Troxx, this film is complex enough you can even pull out circuitous babble like this and still look dignified. :P

Is someone out there defining "socialism" in interesting ways that I don't know about? Because usage of "socialist" like this, it just really baffles me. What is it you even think that means?

At any rate, the underlying tragedy of Brazil is much simpler than all that; It isn't the triumph of machine over humanity, but humanity's failure to act.

Hey, what's with the hostility? Can't a person have their own opinion?

The champagne had died. So it goes.

reply

Can't someone have an opinion that your opinion is wrong?
There's no hostility in my comments; I even included the :P tongue sticking out smiley to indicate the lack of ill will.

reply

I agree. Part of the point of discussing things is to 'objectivate' our subjective opinions and thus convince others that one thing really is better than another.

If people just want to shout incommensurable (and ostensibly equally valid) opinions at one another, then why discuss things on a movie forum in the first place?

reply

violetspecter,
This is what an extreme fascist, socialist state looks like. In the movie, anyone practicing free market capitalism (such as the De Niro character) was labeled a criminal. Apparently, you, like the characters in the movie, have fallen for the propaganda by semi-socialist states (like the U.S.), who label it's control over lives as "rights", "freedom", and "democracy". You, like many of the characters in the movie, are a brainwashed drone. Now that I've told you the reality, it up to you to understand it.

reply

Too harsh.

reply

Understand your concepts before using them...

This movie is more a critique of instrumental reason, which - as the Frankfurt School argue - is embodied in state socialist, late capitalist and (most overtly) fascist social orders. This movie seems to be making the much broader point that in order to free ourselves collectively from domination, we must find a way to escape from the totalising grip instrumental reason holds over the consciousness and social structures of contemporary social order.

"Yes..!"

[deleted]

Your critic may be right - you have no clear position. Do you like this movie or not? That is the ultimate requirement. Some don't understand it, some love it despite its commercial limitations. Anyone with half a brain consider it one of the most important films ever made, as do I. What do you think? If you're going to bother to type even 25 words, I'd like to know your position.

Why did Michelangelo sculpt the Statue of David or paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?

Why did Alexandros of Antioch sculpt the statue Aphrodite of Milos (better known as the Venus de Milo)?

Why did Da Vinci paint the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper?

Why did Botticelli paint The Birth of Venus?

The fact that you've expressed a preference to watch Armageddon over Brazil speaks for itself.

reply

"This film is an easy point made complicated. Why make this film? It does not contribute with anything new! This film is for the average."

Why ? Because, apparently, Gilliam is a "genius". I've never understood why, but that's how he's perceived.

"So you're keen on music ?"
"Yes..!"

reply

Just read 1984 instead it is 10 times better at making the same point. This movie is a FAIL.

reply

Yes. I get the point of "Brazil" - it's like a comedy version of 1984. It has some finely crafted and funny scenes, but it's ultimately boring, overlong, needlessly complex and disjointed. I don't get why it's so highly rated in IMDb, while a great film like "1984" is so underrated.

reply

Because people prefer comedy to preachiness.

reply

[deleted]

Errr... I don't see how "1984" is any more preachy than "Brazil". They say basically about the same things in different ways. "Brazil" is clearly a post-modern approach to dystopia, but it says nothing new or different than previous stories of the kind.

And I love a good comedy, but "Brazil" is not it. It's boring.

reply

Actually, Orwell had originally wanted to make 1984 funnier than it ended up being. It was supposed to be a dark comedy, but what we got was a first draft written shortly before he died.

So . . . in many ways, Brazil is what Orwell had originally wanted, and I don’t see any reason in trying to claim one is better than the other. (Also, “boring, overlong, needlessly complex and disjointed” are the critiques of the bureaucratic system being lambasted in the film. Though it’s a subjective opinion—and I personally was never bored—that might have been intentional.)
