The '80s (especially early '80s) had some very dark animated features. My brother and I often remark that these films would probably never be released today. There were parts of this film and the Last Unicorn that completely freaked me out as a young kid. In the Last Unicorn, the scene of the skeleton saying "UNICORN!" was unwatchable for me after I saw it the first time.
I believe there was also a animated/claymation Mark Twain film that was utterly disturbing as well made during this period. Can't remember the name of it though.
Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.
But those movies were actually good. This was not.
