Don't you hate it when movies you loved as children...

...end up getting $hit reviews on the internet and everyone hates them? Kinda puts me down. I loved this movie when I was little but it seems like most people consider it one of Disney's worst... But I haven't seen it since I was 8 so who knows?

I saw this back in 1985 when I was 10. I had a tremendeous effect on me. It was awesome. I fell in love with the princess, I cried about Gurgi, the damn witches scared me even more than the horned kind already did, and back then the movie had a phantastic atmosphere.

Watched it yesterday for the first time since all these years and of course beeing now some scrutinizing adult I stumbled over all the tropes I never saw as a kid, and the movie had lost most of it's appeal. But that was to be expected and fully ok with me.

It's still a 7/10 because it did what it supposed to be doing: Giving me a awesome time when I was a kid.

Me, too! It's just very racist and sexist thing. It's stupid, dull, and dumb. The Wiz having a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes? You have just got to be kidding me!!!!!!! The Stupid Naruto show is partly to blame. The only movies that need negative reviews are NC-17 movies like Showgirls, Some R-rated movies such as the Exorcist, and racy movies such as Naruto. Just about Anything that's evil!!

My Dear Friend, Just remember that heaven is blue. Tomorrow, the World!!!!!!
Bring in my Bloopers!!!!!! - Blue Meanies- Yellow Submarine

How is people not liking a film racist or sexist? Lol, some people like different films over others. No need to take it that far, ha.

I think austinlovesjapan meant to say' hypocritical'

reply

People are being unfair to it....sure it has some flaws but it is NOT close to being Disney's worst.

I'd rather watch THIS over kiddy crap like DUMBO or BAMBI. =___= In fact, I don't get why those two movies are so beloved. In my opinion, you'd only enjoy them if you were FIVE.

Black Cauldron on the other hand is badass.
"But it's a ROCK!"
"I KNOW IT'S A ROCK!"

Bambi is not that kiddy. The second half of the movie has some really powerful and suspenseful stuff.

The problem with The Black Cauldron is that the script didn't develop the characters properly, and also gave the movie a bad pacing. When I first watched it, I found myself not liking Taran. He was pretentious, dull and stupid. The secondary characters were pretty boring too, except Fflewddur Fflam, who got me some smiles every once in a while. So yeah, I still think this movie failed not only because it usually happens when Disney tries something different, but also because of the bad script.

reply

Disney trying something different is not the reason why the Black Cauldron failed at the Box office. It was due to bad reviews. Disney needs to diversify, yet retain its uniqueness.

I think I didn't explain myself properly. Of course, I didn't mean that Disney should keep using the same formula over and over. What I mean is that sometimes the audience is not ready for a change, and when Disney tries something different, the audience may not respond. This and the bad reviews doomed this movie.

Kiddy crap like Dumbo or Bambi????? Those films are worse than The Black Cauldron!??!?!?!? WOW.... just wow.

Don't critize my beloved Bambi!!!!!!!!! It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I know who you are, a stupid Naruto fanatic and Pervy anime crap!!!!! If you don't like Bambi, You probably hate Kimba the White Lion too!!!! Bambi is one of the most mature movies ever. But, you are kinda right about Dumbo, It may be more childish than Bambi, although it's for the whole family. One more thing to say,you are the one being the childish one. Don't start arguing because it only makes things worse, try to use compromises.

Because they are classics? Lol, they are liked more for the heart (Dumbo) and the art and music and storytelling (Bambi, not what I'd really call kiddy crap lol some of the people I know didn't like it as kids because they found it boring.)

Whilst The Black Cauldron wasn't well received, that doesn't mean its not a classic if you think it is. Some people liked the darker Disney, some liked the more light-hearted Disney, personally I think there is a good medium of dark and light-hearted in the majority of the films (meaning classics, not the sh!tty sequels).

There is also no need to be like that about the people that like Bambi and Dumbo and saying they would only be enjoyed if you are about 5. Sure, that is your opinion but in my opinion, that is you basically saying adults who like those films have somewhat the film appreciation of a 5 year old and I find that very rude to say.

I loved this when I first saw it as a little kid and I still really enjoy it.

Only if I actually take the time to see the movie again and then think it still holds up.

So it was not a success at its original run... so? SLEEPING BEAUTY wasn't exactly a howling success back in 1959.
Conque no fue' un e'xito en su primera temporada... ?y eso, que'? LA BELLA DURMIENTE no fue' exactamente un exitazo en 1959.

Just watched it. The animation is amazing and the recognizable voices of Hurt and Huston were good, but I found the movie hard to watch. Taran, who as a kid I would have liked for his adventure seeking, I find to be unbearable and whiny. Some of the editing is brutal and the story is weak. It doesn't stand the test of time very well.

I find your comments about this film interesting. But with me, I found the story to be brilliant. Some of the editing was also due to whiny parents. Mike Peraza who worked on this film mentioned this.

reply

Same here. I loved this movie when I was 5-6 years old. But honestly I was a little retard and didnt know better. Kids are often not judging anything and are positive towards everything. I watched it again at older age and though it was nostalgic I understand that it actually is a pretty bad movie.

I agree, Diamond Sky.

Tbh I really couldn't care less about what other people think of this movie because they don't pay for my Television or DVD purchases. Me and my friends still find this badass! It's not perfect but is pretty daring for a Disney movie and gives a lot of reflection of an old source for terrible nightmares. Disney doesn't have a great reputation and most of their movies are sappy, corny and very far from the original fairytales they try to portray.

reply

Hey, don't worry!
I still like "Rock-A-Doodle", "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story", "Pebble and the Penguin", and "Pokemon: The First Movie" to some extent, and all those movies got much worse reception than "The Black Cauldron". XD
