BD walks into the bar and says 'Look, they have a wide screen TV'

Wait a minute! Wide screen televisions were not available in 1985 (I just did a Google search).

Also when they were shooting the first commercial there was a shot that was supposed to be what the movie camera saw and there were lines describing the wide screen TV format.

How did the filmmakers predict the advent of wide screen TVs in 2000 when filming in 1985?

They did not necessarily predict wide-screen TVs in the movie. The TV in the bar was a big rear projection screen that also (at the time) was much bigger than any CRT (regular tube TV) that was available in 1985. Also, remember that Movie Theatre screens were wide aspect ratio at the time and it may have been the case of simply calling the "big" rear projection screen a "wide screen" just like a movie theatre screen was back then.

Hope this helps.

I also remember like you said the projection TV's back during the mid to late 80's. You might be right on that as well.
