No wonder MST passed on the original!

Wow. I found the original Legend of Boggy Creek at my local Blockbuster. I rented it and had a VERY hard time watching it. It makes Boggy Creek II look like a Spielberg film. I could only sit through about 20 minutes at a time. First of all, it's a terrible film-to-video transfer and it's kinda squished sideways to fit on a TV screen. The sound, the acting, the music... all terrible. Although, we are treated to a really bad song... a couple times, in fact. Oh, and we get to see the actor who played the storekeeper in the sequel in his younger, thinner, clean-shaven, sweat-stain-free glory! But, really, the biggest problem is the interminable stretches of sound-free footage -- no dialogue, no music, very little sound effects work. And it's really dark, so there's not much to look at, either. I thought "Manos": The Hands of Fate and The Touch of Satan were heavy on the pauses, but they've got nothing on this movie. I doubt even the MST people would be able to save this one. There's simply nothing to react to! If you manage to find it, watch it with extreme caution. It's rough.

really you have seen both films and think Boggy 2 is the better Pic? heck "Tim" was a better actor in the first film then this one.

Hellboy: I hate those comic books. They never get the eyes right

reply

Absolutely. I mean, the sequel was terrible, but at least it was good fodder for some jokes. The original was too boring to even sit through.

the original was made as a documentary. these pale in comparison

reply

NOTHING pales in comparison to The Legend of Boggy Creek... maybe it's just me, but I don't think a string of re-enactments qualifies as a documentary.

reply

Well it does count as a documentary.. Sorry your elitist views can't see that. And whoever said the monster is fictional? People sight that thing all the time. He's right up there with bigfoot and the loch ness monster. You can buy all kinds of swag down there. I have my Aunt who lives down that way send me stuff every once and again because I liked the movie so much as a kid.

I've never seen the first one and I could've done without the outhouse scene. That was just nasty. When it comes to bad movies, I stick to the MST3K versions of them. MST3K makes bad movies easier to watch, though on the downside, I have to restrain myself from making similar cracks in the theaters.

I hate when people use the word "swag".

You guys sound as if watching a movie that in your OPINION isn't that great drains on your already diminishing intelligence. Who cares if the transfer isn't that great, master copies deteriorate over time...it was the best they could do with what they had. And with the acting, THEY WEREN'T ACTORS! And I also hate it when people use "swag"....it's just annoying.

reply

I rather enjoyed the original. It's campy and definitely "b" but it's got a good atmosphere to it. Yes, I could have done without the "Hey Travis Crabtree" and that "This is where the story grows" songs, but the rest of it was kind of neat.
Look at it without thinking of this sequel atrocity and no expectations, and it's pretty entertaining.

This thing was filmed in and around my home town of Texarkana. There were several sightings of "The Fouke Monster" some years ago. I have been out of T-Town since 1977, so I don't know if he's still prowling around there or not.

Although I had a couple of friends in the movie, I thought it was terrible. I went to the original showing, in Texarkana. They made a big deal out of it, since Pierce was from Texarkana.

And, although it's been YEARS since I saw the movie, I still remember that "Hey Travis Crabtree" song.

Oh....a side note to Pierce Jr. I was dating a girl who had a part in another Pierce epic - "The Town That Dreaded Sundown". One day, on the set, I saw CB Jr walking around, with this BIG kid right by him. I asked who the big kid was, and was told it was Jr's body guard. Seems Jr had become such a snot-nose punk, once his daddy become a big time movie producer, that he was constantly being beaten up by the other kids. So, CB Sr hired a body guard for his kid.

I love the original. I remember watching it when I was like 7 and it scared me. I have the dvd and watch it about once a month. Who were your friends in the movie justanemailidforme? "Welllll Travis" -Herb Jones

reply

That's hilarious.
I was born in Doyline, La and Bigfoot sightings are top news stories there. That part of the country is a very creepy place. There's something about the swamps and cypress trees. All of my childhood memories of the landscape remind me of horror movies.

You know, you're just going to embiggen them with that attitude.

Good question, videorogue1... I don't think anyone on here did.

And why does not liking an extremely boring movie make me an elitist? If I was an elitist, I'd be singing the praises of Citizen Kane like all the deluded 'experts' out there.

It's funny how ignorant kids like stupid things.

LOBC = CLASSIC!!!!!

BC2 = Not even close.

You have pretty crappy understanding of what's good. The Legend of Boggy Creek is a goddamn masterpiece, where as this has the writing and acting of a 3rd grade play.

reply

I’m in 17 years late for the OP, but now that the Blu-ray of LoBC is out, I recommend another viewing. The movie looks great, clearer than I’ve ever seen it. Sounds great, too. The movie may or may not grab you, but there’s no denying it has a certain power (and charm). Honestly, it works best if you have memories of it terrifying you as a kid.
