Area 88 OVA is now on Dvd!

ADV have finally released all 3 episodes of Area 88 OVA for the first time on dvd.

Originally Area 88 OVA had only had it's first episode released on dvd by Central Park Media called 'Area 88: Blue Skies of Betrayal'.

Now finally people can finish this heartbearking story they began. You will be pleased to know ADV have remastered the video to make it look simply stunning, included all the original japanese extras and given it a new english dub.

Overall i rate it this title as a masterpiece up there with other classics such as Gunbuster, Akira and Wings of Honneamise.

But is it all three parts? From what I read it looked like it was either just the first OVA or the first two. Either way, I ordered it, but I really hope it does have all thre parts.

Have you watched the Area 88 TV series? Would you recommend it?

Are you talking about the remake or is this like a remastered edition of the orginal?

I know that resently there was a remake that looked an awfull lot like the orginal accept that unfornately they did all the dogfighting sences in CG.

The original OVA from 1985 is far superior to the recent remake made in 2004.

I'd only suggest picking up the tv series if you can find it cheap.

The OVA on the otherhand is a masterpiece that should be seen by all, i'm glad everyone in this thread has already bought the dvd.

I bought it as soon as I found out. It's two discs, but it has all the parts I remembered from the original VHS. Also, I may add that the English Audio isn't that shabby. A lot of the characters speak as if they fit the late 70 era. Didn't check out the extras, probably nothing great (never tend to be on anime).

As for the recent series, I didn't mind it. The fast beat euro techno music was kinda trendy. Also, the final dog fight was fairly badass. I just might point out that they changed the story about halfway through, and that let me down. As mentioned, you can find it fairly cheap or even (hiss) a bootlegged fansub on ebay. I watched them before they got picked up for license.

Just a slight correction, AREA 88 was originally made in the mid-'80s, not the '70s.

I'm certainly glad that the original OAV series is finally out on DVD and I'm also grateful to ADV for releasing it on two disks instead of just one episode per disk, but I personally hate the way they replaced the old dub with a new one.

Just so everyone knows, I am a big fan of Chris Patton, Jason Douglas, Hilary Haag, Luci Christian, and quite a few of the other voice actors used for the new dub. I wouldn't have minded at all if they had done it as a three-audio track, with the Japanese, the original Central Park Media dub, or the ADV dub, or if AREA 88 had never been dubbed into English before. But I hated the way they just threw out the old dub altogether.

A dub itself is a work of art, and it actually angers me when they throw out the old version of something, making it so that people don't even have the option of watching something the way they once did. It's like when George Lucas originally released the first STAR WARS trilogy on DVD and the only version available was the Special edition. (Though thankfully he later released both versions on DVD.)

Anyway, I'm just sorry that I can't watch the original dub on DVD. I have the first two VHS volumes released by Central Park Media dubbed, but I've never been able to get volume three.
