does anyone know how long it took to film this movie?
it seems like the characters really age from beginning to end (like 2 or 3 years) yet I read somewhere that the opening scene at the orphanage was the very last scene shot.
anyone know?

So, the actors haven't aged during filming, in fact. They just changed their costumes and headdresses. It is especially noticeable with Gilbert. When he is in a suit he looks much older than when he is in boyish clothes with a cap. Even when you compare some scenes from the sequel (like the bicycle race) with his "official" suit scenes in the first movie (like the concert near the end).
