*NEW* Anne Movie: Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning

I just got this from the newsletter.

I'm not particularly excited about it. (I wish Sullivan would have just stuck to what LMM wrote -- it's pretty great itself without making up new stuff based on her characters.) But it is interesting.

Here is a link to more info:

this is very exciting. anne is one of my favorite movies ever. hopefully megan will return as older anne(if they show her) and jonathan as gilbert.

the only thing is, what young actress can capture the beauty and whimzyness of anne just as great as megan did? i hope they find a good one.

it sounds very intresting.

I don't like the part about Anne finding a letter in the floorboards of Green Gables. That sounds too contrived.

This little girl's audition on youtube is perfect in my opinion...so much like Megan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGaSegLYcno&mode=related&search=

reply

I can't imagine anyone in that roll other than Megan. No offense to whoever they cast, but it just won't be as good.

Lorelai Gilmore: Disappointing mothers since 1968.

reply

This would be interestingr, but who would play Gil? I'd love to, but at 15 I've grown to old. sigh.

reply

I don't know, but I hope they are newcomers. I can't see anyone out now playing Gil. Or Anne.

Lorelai Gilmore: Disappointing mothers since 1968.

reply

If they stick to what is described in the letter, Gil won't be there, since it happens before Anne arrives on PEI.

actually Gil was a few years older than Anne- you're about the right age.

OK this is what i think , i have some mixed feeling about this , one is because it should have been done first and then anne of green gables with megan fellows and that way it would have had megan in the role of anne .

oh well , my undersanding of it is that it will give more information on what happened with anne's parents and then also about the 2 other family's that anne lived with before going to PE iland keven is going to take the info from the book and elaberate on it from what a clip from the keven webiste said .

I guess we will see what happens .

The 3rd movie was too disappointing for me - I wouldn't be bothered watching a new one. It's a pity he wouldn't leave it all alone - the first 2 were great though. Wish they'd make The Blue Castle of L.M. Montgomery's into a movie.

reply

Ugh. You've got to be kidding me. I thought Anne was already milked dry through the 3 Sullivan movies. There's no need to make another one (there was no need to make a third one, either. And I imagine I could have survived without the second); Anne didn't HAVE a story before Green Gables. As far as I'm concerned, if LMM didn't write it, it didn't happen.

Bloop.

reply

That's why I hated the third movie so much.

They're calling the fourth one completely original??

Hell, the THIRD one was completely original. Even in the second one they started to move away from the books (I've read all 8 books twice) but it was still close enough to be enjoyable.

But they had it so screwed up by the time they did the third one they had the WRONG generation of Blythes going to war. In the books, it wasn't Gil who went to war - he was too old by that time to join up so he stayed home with Anne and the rest of their family. It was his and Anne's two oldest sons, Jem and Walter who went to Europe to fight. Jem came home, Walter didn't. The only thing connecting the third movie to the novels were the characters - though in name only, their ages and the timeline was completely screwed up - of Anne and Gilbert.

hopefully jonathon crombie will be in it coz hes so gorgeous and talented

No offense, but it's simply idiotic to expect a screenwriter to perfectly follow the books they are adapting. Obviously there are changes (which are also explained in the Trivia for part 3) and to be fair the movies should be judged separately from the books b/c they are 2 entirely different mediums. The 3rd movie still had the characters we all love, and the story wasn't perfectly accurate but people need to get over it. Movies and books are apples and oranges.

Don't forget your roots but also don't rot, just move on, move on, move one

reply

That may be, but he has a wealth of material that is completely thrown out. It isn't an adaptation of her stories anymore. The first two were quite different from the books, but they contained the spirit, some of the best stories, and yes it was changed but it worked. Writing your own screenplay and calling it Anne of Green Gables may sell product, but its disingenuous and tacky. Then again, Sullivan knows all about tacky. He's milked Anne and Road To Avonlea for every penny he can get from it. You can buy (from HIM, of course) anne perfume, body lotion, commemorative plates, RINGTONES, "anne" music collections (not soundtracks, just collections with her name on it), dolls, jewelery, jewelery boxes, mirrors, coasters, mugs, clocks, night lights, picture frames, NESTING TABLES, lamps, garden globes, INSPIRATIONAL POSTERS!!!!

Need I go on? He's even used his special features on DVDs just to promote new products. I love the first two Anne moves/mini-series, but he makes me sick.

This is very different from expecting someone to follow the books exactly. How about using anything from the books at all? That character in 3 wasn't even Anne. It was Megan, and her name was Anne, but she didn't act or talk like anne, from the earlier movies or the books. It wasn't her character anymore, it was a name to sell products.

reply

They had the time mixed up earlier than the third movie too. It's got something to do with when the motor car appears in it. It's twenty years out from the book's timing. That's why when it got to WWI, Anne and Gilbert are still not even married yet according to the movie.

reply

I wish I Could say that I am really excited about this film, but truth is i'm not. I loved the first three films and think they were excellent because of the actors. I will have no interest in this film whatsoever if Megan and Jonathan do not appear in some way, shape, or form. I just don't see the point in going backwards. I personally think Kevin could do a great script about Rilla (Anne's Daughter) from the "Rilla of Ingleside" book or just create a story for her of his own.

I just believe at this point that Anne's story has been exhausted. I know some people might care about what happened to her before Green Gables, but ultimately all that could have happened is a depressing pretty dull series of events that culminate in her ending up with the mean woman (Ms. Hammond?) with all of the twins. How can that story be anything but depressing, and like so many of you have said....I know young Anne as Megan Follows, and no one will EVER be able to properly duplicate her performance.

To me, a Anne movie with no Gilbert, Marilla, Matthew, Diana, Miss Stacey, or even at Hetty King is just not that interesting. I'd just prefer another Road to Avonlea film or as I said before something with Rilla. If they they do this film right though, we will see Megan as the narrator and Jonathan doing something as well. IF they do it right! What do you all think?

reply

That's what I don't get about Sullivan. Lucy Maude wrote such fascinating books--there are 3-4 other books he could have tapped to exploit instead of completely making up a WRONG story for Anne and Gil. He seems to think that no one would want to watch a true to the book version because it would be too boring. WHAT?!?!? I would love to see a true version! I think it would be great to see Anne of Ingelside brought to life where she thinks she has a real rival in Christine Stuart. All of those stories have so much more imagination than Sullivan's.
I bet if it were up to him he'd just call her Ann.

reply

I know! I wish he had stayed true to the books! I would have loved to see Anne at Queens! It was the best book out of the bunch!

reply

I think this is not a good idea. Honestly no one can play Anna as well as Megan did so it will be less good than the first one...this means that there is no needs to do it again! BUT it can be great to see Megan in this role again if they show an old Anne
But I keep on believing that this first one was too good! not only Megan! all the cast was perfect...

Anne's pre-Green Gables history was thoroughly explained in the books, so I don't see what "new" story he would be coming up with.

That made me laugh and shudder at the same time! Just looking at it makes me shudder!

This makes very little sense, since she was orphaned at a very young age. She didn't have a chance to be with her parents long.

I'd rather have him create a story with Anne later in life and have Megan Follows come back. I'm not interested if it's not about the Anne she portrayed......

I ditto that. I loved Megan Follows as Anne. I would love to have another great Anne storyline with Megan F. acting it out. To ME, she IS Anne.

reply

We know what happened to Anne's parents. They died of yellow fever when she was three months old! Unless the movie follows the book version of Anne's early years (the Thomas and Hammond families) and then the orphanage before she went to the Cuthberts, it will totally blow and Anne fans will chase Sullivan down with torches and pitchforks. Has he already forgotten what a travesty his WWI Anne film was?

I am very excited about this movie . I was kind of skeptical about it but I really want to see it. Is it going to air in the US? I have only heard of it airing in Canada on CBC sometime next year. I would be very disapointed if it didn't air in the US.

reply

This movie sounds like it'll be made of epic fail. Sullivan screwed the pooch with that third movie, and this doesn't sound like it'll be any better. Sounds more like he's rewriting/ignoring the original stories to suit his tastes (which is pretty much what he did with Anne 3). That was four hours of my life I'll never get back, and I'm not giving him any more.
