How much was shot on P.E.I. ?

I was wondering how much of the movie was actually shot on the Island. IMDb lists quite a few shooting locations including many in Ontario. How about the Cuthberts' farm, Green Gables itself; was that shot on P.E.I.? (I know the Island has a Green Gables visitor attraction and the farmhouse is different.) Thanks.

Most of the cast and the crew never went to PEI, so many shots with the actors in them weren't done in PEI. A crew went to PEI to shot landscapes, establishing shots, etc, and often with body doubles.

Green Gables itself isn't in PEI. Most, if not all, of the movie was shot in Ontario. In certain locations, they even spray painted the road red to make it look like the Island.

I'll be darned. Thanks for the info. In scenes where Anne and Diana are on the seashore (might have been in the sequel), then, where were those shot? thx

reply

I was actually wrong before. Well, partly. Most of the cast didn't go to PEI, but Megan and Schuyler did. That scene when Anne & Diana run down to the seashore, that was shot in PEI according to the DVD commentary by director Kevin Sullivan.

However, for instance, when Anne & Matthew ride to Green Gables, there are a few shots where it IS Megan in PEI, but a body double playing Matthew.

My wife and I were visiting PEI during the time the movie was being shot (1985?).
We visited almost all the locales mentioned, and in one house, there was a lot of movie equipment being stored. They told us about the movie being made so we viewed the resulting movie with increased interest.
As far as the actual "House", we visited it, so it WAS on PEI. It is located on property housing a golf country club.
btw.... PEI is a VERY lovely place.

Although some background and outdoor scenes were filmed in Prince Edward Island, sadly, over 98% of both Anne of Green Gables and The Sequel were filmed in Ontario. And that is the only reason I did not give these two terrific TV movies 10/10 stars. Really, there was no valid reason why these movies had to be filmed in Ontario. The decision to film there instead of PEI was idiotic. As much as they tried, they couldn't make Ontario look like PEI. And it was a distraction. For heaven's sake, they even spray painted parts of the roads and lanes red so they would look something like PEI topsoil (yet it still didn't look at all like PEI). The cinematography would have been so much better if only they had shot these movies on location, in PEI, where the story took place. At least, the scenery would then agree with the descriptions given by Lucy Maude Montgomery in her book.

Where possible, I believe period pieces should always be filmed on the location where the story takes place.

Yes, I agree, PEI IS a very lovely place, and no, I do not live there.

Thank you for the response. I appreciate it.
No matter where they were actually shot, I still enjoyed both, the original and the sequel. It's possible that our visit to the area shortly before seeing the movie enhanced our watching pleasure.
