Sulllivan - terrible video quality!

I borrowed this DVD from the library and the video quality is absolutely TERRIBLE. It's so grainy and I would even say out of focus. It's like watching a third copy of a video tape!?

It's a Sullivan Entertainment DVD.

Is there another DVD version that doesn't look washed out, or are they all like this?

reply

I've heard some people complain about the quality of the DVD's. I would agree that I have seen much sharper quality with other movies, but it's not so horrible that it distracts me while watching, and it's not so bad that I wouldn't buy the DVD's. I think the quality is at least acceptable. Not the best, but good enough for me.

Maybe it will come out on Blu-Ray someday. People would definitely be interested in buying it if they did.

IIRC, wasn't the whole thing shot on video? SO you do need to consider that they had one source of VT unlike, say, Live Aid...

What was it shot on? Video, 16mm or 35mm?

This film was recently re-released on DVD, and the picture should be much improved as compared to the original discs. A new scan was taken from the 16mm camera negative, so the picture is much sharper---and also presented in widescreen so as to fill the screen of modern televisions.

Now, I'm not sure where to buy this version, other than at Sullivan's website---a quick glance at Amazon only showed the old DVD for sale.

Sullivan entertainment was rereleased the DVD after digitally restoring them from the original 16mm and reformatted the Anne movies to new 16:9 format. While not superb in outdoor scenery (way too much information than DVD can provide), it's way more watchable. You can only get this release direct - DVD video stores only stock the original version.
