Just saw the Coen Brothers' 'True Grit'

Saw "True Grit" a few days ago and couldn't help but think of Anne Shirley. Now, Anne was never caught in the middle of a gunfight or cut a hanged man down from a tree, but the tenacious spirit of Mattie Ross makes them so alike. They were both very intelligent for their age, well-spoken, articulate, shrewd, and let their opinions be known. It wasn't hard to imagine Megan Follows in the role. I thought it was a great movie.

Oh, that's nice to know :) I didn't see True Grit yet but will surely be giving it a thought when I will be watching it :)

I guess, but they were still more different than they were alike IMO.

Mattie is serious and simple. Anne is vibrant and energetic. Anne isn't always as mature as Mattie, and I cannot imagine serious Mattie pretending to be Lady Elaine and nearly getting herself drowned and holding a several-year-long grudge against a boy who made fun of her hair.

Raise your glasses, please, into a toast, for we are many hometown ghosts.

I think the similarity seeing is in the acting style. I noticed it too the first time I saw the Coen's True Grit. The way Hailee Steinfeld delivers her lines, ennunciates, moves her mouth etc. It reminded me very much of Megan. And I hadn't watched AoGG in years when I first saw True Grit in the cinema but I noticed the similarity right off.

Perhaps there's a particular type of actor training for children of that age which would make them similar. Or maybe it's just coincidence.
