Am I the only guy that loved this?..and some other thoughts.

I watched this when I was growing up and was only like 9 when it came out. Plus many times more in the 80's because if I remember correctly the Disney channel had the rights to it for a while and used to show it. Now now that I look back it seems like it would of been more of a coming-of-age flick for girls. Having said that I still think it was one of the best things television put out back in the 80's along with the 80's television version of Alice in Wonderland.

I suppose for guys to relate to there was the Gilbert Blythe character. I always wanted them to get together because to me Anne was the exact type of girl I always liked. I think this helped form some of my views on television/movies today as I still love things based in this time period, literature, and pieces of work that show how simple romance used to be.

I wish I would of been born in this era people were different back then especially in more rural areas like P.E.I. The turn of the century was an interesting period this was before the Great Depression, WW1, the roaring 20's, etc. Does anyone else know of any good flicks or series based in this time period? It seems most are set in the eras before or after this. One of my all time favorite series I would still like to read the books someday. Does anyone know if there is a remake in the works or a hollywood version? I doubt it would be better than this though!

Brideshead Revisited is set after WW1 and goes up until WW2. I know that isn't the era you wanted, but it's a really great programme.

You could try the 'Road to Avonlea' series, too.

Oh, and no; you're not the only guy that liked this.

reply

Yes, they used to give this to soldiers in the trenches! So you can't be.

reply

Do you mean the book?

reply

Yes, it was during WW1 I think. I'm guessing just to remind people of home and to be pure escapism from anything gung-ho and war related.

That's quite an image. A soldier reading 'Anne of Green Gables' during a mustard gas attack.

I started watching it and my husband asked if he could watch it. I told him he probably wouldn't be interested. He sat down anyway, loved it and we watch it together every year. Who knew?

If you appreciate good filmmaking, you'll like this movie.

I'm a guy and I've watched the three movies and the Avalon series on the Disney Channel.

I do remember another guy at work speaking about watching ANNE OF GREEN GABLES. His only complaint? Gilbert Blythe. My co-worker said, "She could do better than that." So I knew he was interested in the story.

The first two movies, and the Avalon series, take place in what's known in history as La Belle Epoque, the beautiful age between the 1890s and World War One. Many movies have had this time period as their setting.

Walt Disney practically based his career on making movies about La Belle Epoque. MARY POPPINS, THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA, POLLYANNA, TOBY TYLER, SUMMER MAGIC, SO DEAR TO MY HEART and THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE take place in it, plus a couple of cartoons like PETER PAN.

That's probably why ANNE briefly found a home on the Disney Channel.

Wow Boomermoviefan thanks for the info. I never knew the era was called that and I didn't realize Mary Poppins was set in that era as well. Yes Disney used to get a lot of shows based around this time period it seems. I used to watch them all the time back in the 80's when I was growing up. I am going to start reading more about this time period it just seems like such an interesting 30 year span or so.

This is a great story. The cast is perfect. I identify one thousand percent with Richard Farnsworth,Matthew Cuthbert. This film depicts a perfect era in the mind of L.M.Montgomery,the author of the book written in 1919. This movie reminds me of an old black and white movie,"I Remember Mama,1948." It,also, takes place around the turn of the nineteenth century. It is a heartwarming story written by Kathryn Forbes,a daughter.

Extremely high production values, and incredibly well shot.

I believe that the quality of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES transcends all ages and both genders. It is just amazing, period!

I was 11 when I read the novels. Once I got started, I could not put them down. I saw the ANNE OF GREEN GABLES miniseries when I was 13, on the CBC. LOVED it! Loved the sequel too, as well as ROAD TO AVONLEA.

I am male and I am almost 40 now. Loved them then and I love them now!
