this was a joke...right?

I sincerely hope it was. I couldn't stop laughing [and gaging] throughout the whole movie. I can now easily say that this is the worst movie that i have ever seen. It was so dumb and corny and horrible...and no im not an insensitive person, I love old movies and musicals like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz, but this movie was complete crap.
"Oh how shall I meet my boozum friend!?"

I enjoyed it and didn't think it crap.

I, like the rest of the people who responded to this, would recommend that you read the book. Although, judging by your spelling and grammatical skills, it may be above your level of knowledge.

You were "gaging" throughout the movie? What were you trying to gage? Maybe you should try to gage whether you have taste in film period. Is a boozum friend one you go boozing with? If so, that's probably why Anne didn't find a boozum friend. She found a bosom friend in Diana.

Here's a helpful hint before you feel you need to rant about another classic film. There is something called a "." It ends a sentence. If you continue a sentence on and on with commas, it's called a run-on. If you are truly taking a film and literature class, I can only imagine the fun your teacher/professor is having grading your work.

What a lousy response. It's actually called ad hominem, since you expressed a respect for "educated" responses. Instead of responding to the comment, you attacked the person. I disagree with her and love Anne of Green Gables, but I disagree with you more on how to treat people when they don't share an opinion.

Yes thank you for saying this

The poster is clearly close minded and havent paid attention to the movie

Anyone who gags through the whole movie is clearly delusional. And doesnt understand the context.

reply

You must not know what a good movie is then. This is one of the best movies ever. Ive loved it since I was a child and watched it more times than I can count.

reply

the whole point of the movie was that she was overly dramatic made that way by being unwanted (I guess u would have to know what that feels like) the rest of the series has her growing out of that and coming into her own

I've never met one person who didn't love this movie.

reply

I actually just saw the first two movies for the first time and really like them. I can't judge them by the books because I haven't read them, but the movies are great no matter what.

reply

I just recently saw the first one (for the first time) so I got the whole set and watched them. I love all three of them, but #1 is my favorite because of how funny it is! I hate how they separated Anne & Gilbert in the second and third for such a long period of time. But they were still great!

reply

Exactly in order watch this movie you must understand the characters first before you call this a gagging film.

reply

It's not a joke but Anne's comments and behavior are supposed to be unintentionally funny a lot of the time.

reply

I think your post must be a joke. If you had bothered to read the book you would know that it is supposed to be a comedy and that Anne is supposed to be over-dramatic. And considering that The Sound of Music, Marry Poppins and the Wizard of Oz were all musicals and all made around 20 years before this movie was- I think that you just have proven yourself to be pretty stinking stupid.

reply

I don't know what the original poster was snorting when he/she typed this. I grew up watching the films and YES I read Gables/Avonlea/Island over a decade afterwards. There are differences and similarities as there are with all book to film adaptations. Reading the books did in no way take away my love for the films. As a matter of fact, I prefer the films. And even if you prefer the novels, I cannot in no way understand how you don't see the beauty in these films.

reply

I agree... I read the whole series on "Anne" books (what are there 7? it's been a while) much after I saw the first 2 movies (I'm so happy to find there is a third!). And I've always loved the movies sense they were first shown on Disney as miniseries all those years ago. And I love the books. The books may be different but I wouldn't say "better". Longer, more details, yes, but not better. And I've also never found someone who doesn't like this movie.

reply

And I sincerely hope that one day you develop some manner of taste. Read the book, then you will appreciate Anne Shirley. Although if your taste is this horrible now I doubt you can be redeemed.

quiteclassically: It's not a joke but Anne's comments and behavior are supposed to be unintentionally funny a lot of the time.

Oh my, oh my! A few lines immediately came to mind! Laugh with me, yall!

I'll put Anne's words in red to be a bit facetious given Anne's um...feelings...about said color!

*DISCLAIMER: I, the author of this post, assume no personal responsibility for any ensuing hilarity or the consequences thereof!*

Anne (to Mrs. Lynde): Mrs. Lynde, I'm extremely sorry I said those rude things to you. I've disgraced my good friends who've let me stay at Green Gables on trial, even though I'm not a boy. What you said about me is true: I am skinny and ugly and my hair is red. (And then hurriedly) What I said about you is true, too, only I shouldn't have said it. () Please, you wouldn't be so cruel as to inflict a lifelong sorrow on a poor orphan. Please, please, forgive me!

Or

Anne (to Diana): It's probably the smallpock epidemic! Don't worry, Diana! I'll nurse you back to health! Just..please...stay until after tea?

Or

Anne: DON'T EAT IT, MISS STACY!!!

(Followed by a loud plunk from Miss Stacy's fork and startled looks all around!)

Marilla: Anne, what is wrong with you?

Anne: A mouse...drowned in the sauce, Marilla. I was working up the courage to tell you when Miss Stacy came in.

Marilla (as she clears the table): Anne, if you intend to go for teacher, you're going to have to give up your featherbrained ways. You're not interested in anything but your silly daydreams and nothing else!

Anne: I am trying to overcome my faults, Marilla. I know I chatter on far too much...but if you only knew how many things I want to say and don't. Give me some credit.

(Miss Stacey cracks up laughing, followed by Matthew and Marilla)

Anne: Well, I suppose in the end, it was a romantic way to perish...for a mouse.

(Louder laughter as the scene ends)

Or how about one of the funniest scenes in the movie, where Matthew goes into Lawson's General Store to buy a dress for Anne? But because he's so shy, he can't just come out and say he wants to buy a dress with all the other customers around where they might hear? And he comes out with a garden rake and twenty pounds of brown sugar besides? And Marilla's reaction?

Matthew (talking about brown sugar) Would twenty pounds be enough?

And later...

Matthew (whispered): I want to buy a dress...with puffed sleeves.

Alice Lawson (whispered, disbelievingly) Puffed sleeves?

Matthew: For Anne.

Alice Lawson: Oh, land sakes, Mr. Cuthbert! Why didn't you say so in the first place? Now, if you'll just come with me to the window...

*(And my reaction was, "Nuh-uh! He ain't going to that window!")*

And later...

Marilla (wryly, to herself): Twenty pounds of brown sugar!

And if I recall right, this movie also had a few zingers in it, which elicited a few cheers from us! Such as my favorite:

Marilla: It isn't meant to be drunk three tumblerfuls at a time and (to Mrs. Barry) if I had a child who was so greedy, I'd sober her up with a darn good spanking!

Mrs. Barry: Oh, so it's my Diana's fault, is it?

Mrs. Lynde: It's the demon liquor's fault and as I've told you for years, if you didn't insist on making that currant wine...

Marilla: My currant wine is famous all over the island, Rachel Lynde, as you well know and the Reverend Allen himself isn't opposed to taking a bit when he comes calling. And as for Christian virtue, making a little wine for refreshment is far less sinful than MEDDLING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S AFFAIRS!

Ok, now wasn't that fun? Anybody have anything to add? C'mon! You know you wanna!

I think I need to pull out my movies today. The mouse part is one of my favorites. Thanks for making me laugh today!

I haven't watched the movie in so long, thanks for those refreshing thoughts. :)

If you haven't seen the musical on PEI you should attend it, I really enjoyed it. Living on PEI you tend to get a little tired of hearing Anne this and Anne that(especially if you are named Anne like I am...and in my opinion Anne does look better spelled with an "e" without it just looks unfinished[and I hate when people spell my name without it]) but I am also proud.

While I'm aware there are over a dozen responses to this Thread..

Why exactly is this movie a "joke"? Because it's early century-based? Obviously some movie fans don't appreciate classic literature nor pre-century art or romanticism. And that's okay. The rest of us do.

L.M. Montgomery is right up there next to Laura Engalls Wilder and Mark Twain. The "over-dramatizing" of Anne from book to movie was just part of the artistic twist Sullivan chose to portray her. Big deal. I'm such a die-hard Anne (spelled with an E!) fan, I can recite each film in my sleep..

I honestly feel sorry for movie fans who don't appreciate classic romanticism, art, cinematography, or direction - when we get bombarded with dark filth on a regular basis. This series has all the right elements: romance, comedy, suspense, drama.

That's all we truly need :)

How is it that you came to us, and not a boy?

You don't want me because I'm not a boy? No one's ever really wanted me.. ever since I was little.. If I were divinely beautiful, with big brown eyes and chestnut hair - would you keep me then?
