bike race for real?

The Hell of the West bike race portrayed in the movie is it a real race in Colorado, I looked it up on Google and there was not too much on it.

It was the Tour de Coors, or something like that. It's an annual race sponsored by Coors.

Yeah it was a real race called the Coors Classic, which was kind of like an American version of the Tour de France, in that it had several different stages at various locations. The Coors Classic was a great tradition around here, (I live in Grand Junction and was an extra in American Flyer), that ended a few years ago.

Still the best bike race ever to happen on US soil. There is now a DVD set you can get that has the best of the Coors Classic races on there. Well worth watching.

This movie was filmed at the Coors Classic, at the time, the fourth largest stage race in the world behind the Tour de France, Vuelta de Espana and the Giro d'Italia.

It was considered America's National Race. It was originally the Celestial Seasonsings Classic.

America lost a great race when Coors decided not to bow out as a sponsor.

It was called the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic when it was sponsored by Celestial Seasonings.

Apparently part of the old Coors Classic is now the Tour of the Moon cycling event, based near Grand Junction, Colorado.
