Scarier than any horror film!

When I was a kid I remember having nightmares about this movie. There were several scary parts but the one I remember the most was the "jam today, jam tomorrow, but never never jam again" lady!! FRIGHTENING!!

reply

Dude, this movie scared me so much when I was five. I already had the book, and the picture of the Jabberwocky was scary enough...so seeing it on screen freaked me out!

reply

Is this the same movie where the jabberwocky chases her out of the mirror?! I have been looking for this movie everywhere- and damn right, it is really scary!

reply

Yes, this is that same movie.

reply

I know! Im a play of Alice in Wonderland so I watched a few versions of it to get some ideas. They managed to make a light hearted, charming childrens book into a horror story! Id didnt like it much anyways, sooo little effort put into it.

im doing the play right now too! the entire cast watched that version together, and it was hilarious!!!! we were deffinitely freaked out by the jabberwocky though. way scary.

reply

the book is supposed to be scary and trippy

Natalie Gregory? She was an absolute doll in this movie.

reply

I'm glad some see it the way I do.
I still have nightmares. The jabberwocky wasnt scarey at all.
Its the people dressed up like lifesized man animals.
The chechire cat, the rabbit, all pop up out of no where.
They are like the things you would want LEAST to bump into
in a dark ally. I can't believe how freaking scarey this movie is.

reply

I got freaked just seeing Sammy Davis Jr in that insane Caterpillar costume and Donald O'Connor being wasted on two lines!!!
BUT THE JABBERWOCKY MADE ME SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Hey,Cos,do something!Call me a Cab!"
"Okay,you're a cab."

reply

I wonder what S. Davis Jr.'s character was hitting in that hookah. ;)

reply

Because of this movie there is a little concrete "tunnel" under a bridge in Turner, Kansas (a little western section of Kansas City) forever known as the JabbyWocky Tunnel. And when you go under it... into the darkness, riding in the backseat of your parents car, you must cover your ears and hide your eyes and chant,"Jabberwocky, Jabberwocky, 1, 2, 3" over and over until you are clear of the tunnel. It's what my little sister and I did and it kept US alive.

;)

Thanx for playing... please drive thru.

The scariest part, in my opinion, is when the lady is throwing pots and pans at the lady holding the baby, who is singing. It's just so bizarre and disturbing.

reply

I think the scariest part is where Carol Channing (the White Queen) keeps saying "Better, much beeettterrr" as she turns into a goat. That scared the heck out of me!

reply

[deleted]

No Lie!!! That was easily the creepiest part of the movie. Who knew Carol Channing would scare me. heh

reply

I used to hide in the closet when this scene came up when I re-watched it on my recorded Betamax videotape. I don't know if my brother ever converted the Betamax video.

Mustard? Mustard? Now lemon, that's different.

reply

The Carol Channing goat part is very scary.
And the part where the baby turns into a pig freaked me out.
And, I'm sorry, yes the jabberwocky was freakin scary. Especially if you were a 5-year-old watching this on TV for the first time.

The other scary part (to my young mind) was that none of the "adult" characters in Wonderland would help Alice. They all acted crazy, so she was on her own.

Totally agree, it really disturbed me as a kid but couldn't look away. Was so weirded out when baby turned into pig, what the hell was the point of that, someone was doing some gooood drugs at the time!

reply

Holy crap, I had completely forgotten about the baby turning into the pig, but now I'm remembering how utterly terrifying that was to me at the time!! Was there also a scene where Alice was drowning in tears? That used to freak me out as well.

I just saw Carol Channing on TV and it reminded me of this movie, so I came on here and I'm reading the full cast (Scott Baio?? That was funny to read!) and I'm remembering all the characters in the movie and I just couldn't believe how long it's been! I need to buy this for my collection.

I also remember how scary this film was!! All the scary characters...and that dragon! I think I had nightmares for years.

reply

Yeah, that scene was scary. I think it was because it was such a light hearted scene at first with the "Jam" song and all and then after she pricks her finger...well the best way to describe it is a dream turning into a nightmare.

Right after Alice says "I can't belive that!" The White Queen responds "You Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant?" At that moment I knew something was terribly wrong and something "baaaaaaad" (or at least strange) was about to happen.

The "Looking-Glass House" segment at the end of "part one" was just terrifying for me as a kid as well. I mean what a way to end it. Alice finnaly makes it home , she had fallen asleep and it was all a dream. And then...she realizes that it wasn't a dream at all, and not only that, but she's trapped on the other side of the mirror. Then, theres that book with the creepy "Jabberwocky" poem written in it. As she reads it some of the most terrifying music I ever heard as a kid starts to play...and then all hell brakes loose.

I think that it was because a lot of scenes were very light hearted at the begining caused me to be shocked and completley caught off guard when these scenes came up.

reply

man i watched this movie last night and i still got scared. when the baby turns into a pig really scares me

reply

I always thought the Jabberwocky was the scariest part.
It is still a little scarey but not as mush 1 I am much older now 2 we did not have cable and there was a thunder storm when we taped it and no I was not afraid of the thunder storm but when the reception fads in and out will monsters are always scarier when you can’t totally see them.

reply

Exactly! A girl who I met at a party this last weekend brought up this movie and we were the only ones who knew of it. What was even funnier is we had been obsessed with this movie since we were kids and only saw it once. I'm 30 now and still things remind me of it. What the hell is going on. We both agreed Carol turning into sheep was soooo scary. My brother used to chase me around the house saying much beeeeetttteerrr when I was a kid, jerk!
Jabberwocky didn't bother me so much, just that he was showing up and ruining the movie ;-)

reply

This movie did scare me when I was a kid, too. Particularly with the Jabberwocky and Alice is going through the mirror and all that. I need to buy this and see it again, it's been so long!

Doesn't the song go.. "Jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never ever jam today!"
?

reply

Yep, that's EXACTLY how it goes! Hope you have fun when you get to watch it again.

reply

Yes, but if you want to know what that means you could read 'The annotated Alice' by Martin Gardner. It also explains most of what seems weird in the book.

The Jam Yesterday, Jam Tomorrow but never Jam today comes from a way of learning the Latin word for 'now'. In the past and future-tense the word for 'now' is IAM (with latin interchanging i and j, so the word could easily be written as jam). The present tense for 'now' is NUNC. So the rule for learning this at school was IAM (jam) tomorrow and IAM yesterday but never IAM today.

The annotated alice will make you appreciate the book a whole lot more 0 and realise just how clever it is.

PS. REALLY looking forward to the Tim Burton film - favourite director + favourite male lead + favourite book. I hope I am not to be disappointed (or should that be 'jam not to be disappointed' :-)

I can't believe I found this-- my family had tapes this and I used to watch it over and over-- and get freaked out each time!

THe Jabberwocky was the scariest element, but as so many others have said-- so were the insane adults that would never help poor Alice. It made a kid like me terrified-- what if I went somewhere and adults wouldn't help you?

Good stuff! =D

reply

Hahah! This is great to see so many people who think the same way I do. I mean clearly it was scary, but I still think about when Carol Channing turns into the goat, and the jabberwocky, and the baby-pig. For awhile I'd turn it off before teh Jabberwocky part every time i watched it... which was a lot.

reply

seeing the jabberwocky was one of the scariest parts I've seen in any movie!

reply

Beleive it or not,me and my friends watched this movie, saw the Jabberwocky walking on two feet, and started saying how it looked like a drunk Barney!!!XDDD

"Hey,Cos,do something!Call me a Cab!"
"Okay,you're a cab."

reply

I am SO glad that I FINALLY found this version of Alice. I can't wait for Tim Burton's version.
The Jabberwocky was beyond creepy when I saw this as a child.

2 tears in a bucket. Motherf+ck it.

reply

Hahah in fact, I do recall several elements of that film down-right creepy! But that's why it was so awesome!! Trippy balls man. These people where definitely on drugs.

Even though the movie might not have been 100% true to the book, the spirit of it definitely was...certainly more than the animated Disney version was. Lewis Carroll wanted to show what a nightmare the world would eventually become if logic, and the rules of time and space didn't apply.

This was one of the first things I saw on TV when I moved back to the US (at 6 yrs old). My classmates and I all watched it at home, and talked about how scary and weird it was in school the next morning.

Carol Channing. Sheesh, the characters she plays always squick me. I just saw Thoroughly Modern Millie, and her character in it also gave me the creeps. Has she ever played a character straight?
