When I was a kid I remember having nightmares about this movie. There were several scary parts but the one I remember the most was the "jam today, jam tomorrow, but never never jam again" lady!! FRIGHTENING!!

shareI know! Im a play of Alice in Wonderland so I watched a few versions of it to get some ideas. They managed to make a light hearted, charming childrens book into a horror story! Id didnt like it much anyways, sooo little effort put into it.

im doing the play right now too! the entire cast watched that version together, and it was hilarious!!!! we were deffinitely freaked out by the jabberwocky though. way scary.

Its the people dressed up like lifesized man animals.
The chechire cat, the rabbit, all pop up out of no where.
They are like the things you would want LEAST to bump into
in a dark ally. I can't believe how freaking scarey this movie is.
I got freaked just seeing Sammy Davis Jr in that insane Caterpillar costume and Donald O'Connor being wasted on two lines!!!

shareBecause of this movie there is a little concrete "tunnel" under a bridge in Turner, Kansas (a little western section of Kansas City) forever known as the JabbyWocky Tunnel. And when you go under it... into the darkness, riding in the backseat of your parents car, you must cover your ears and hide your eyes and chant,"Jabberwocky, Jabberwocky, 1, 2, 3" over and over until you are clear of the tunnel. It's what my little sister and I did and it kept US alive.

The scariest part, in my opinion, is when the lady is throwing pots and pans at the lady holding the baby, who is singing. It's just so bizarre and disturbing.

And the part where the baby turns into a pig freaked me out.
And, I'm sorry, yes the jabberwocky was freakin scary. Especially if you were a 5-year-old watching this on TV for the first time.
The other scary part (to my young mind) was that none of the "adult" characters in Wonderland would help Alice. They all acted crazy, so she was on her own.

Totally agree, it really disturbed me as a kid but couldn't look away. Was so weirded out when baby turned into pig, what the hell was the point of that, someone was doing some gooood drugs at the time!
Holy crap, I had completely forgotten about the baby turning into the pig, but now I'm remembering how utterly terrifying that was to me at the time!! Was there also a scene where Alice was drowning in tears? That used to freak me out as well.

I just saw Carol Channing on TV and it reminded me of this movie, so I came on here and I'm reading the full cast (Scott Baio?? That was funny to read!) and I'm remembering all the characters in the movie and I just couldn't believe how long it's been! I need to buy this for my collection.
I also remember how scary this film was!! All the scary characters...and that dragon! I think I had nightmares for years.
Yeah, that scene was scary. I think it was because it was such a light hearted scene at first with the "Jam" song and all and then after she pricks her finger...well the best way to describe it is a dream turning into a nightmare.
Right after Alice says "I can't belive that!" The White Queen responds "You Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant?" At that moment I knew something was terribly wrong and something "baaaaaaad" (or at least strange) was about to happen.
The "Looking-Glass House" segment at the end of "part one" was just terrifying for me as a kid as well. I mean what a way to end it. Alice finnaly makes it home , she had fallen asleep and it was all a dream. And then...she realizes that it wasn't a dream at all, and not only that, but she's trapped on the other side of the mirror. Then, theres that book with the creepy "Jabberwocky" poem written in it. As she reads it some of the most terrifying music I ever heard as a kid starts to play...and then all hell brakes loose.
I think that it was because a lot of scenes were very light hearted at the begining caused me to be shocked and completley caught off guard when these scenes came up.

It is still a little scarey but not as mush 1 I am much older now 2 we did not have cable and there was a thunder storm when we taped it and no I was not afraid of the thunder storm but when the reception fads in and out will monsters are always scarier when you can’t totally see them.
Exactly! A girl who I met at a party this last weekend brought up this movie and we were the only ones who knew of it. What was even funnier is we had been obsessed with this movie since we were kids and only saw it once. I'm 30 now and still things remind me of it. What the hell is going on. We both agreed Carol turning into sheep was soooo scary. My brother used to chase me around the house saying much beeeeetttteerrr when I was a kid, jerk!
Jabberwocky didn't bother me so much, just that he was showing up and ruining the movie ;-)
This movie did scare me when I was a kid, too. Particularly with the Jabberwocky and Alice is going through the mirror and all that. I need to buy this and see it again, it's been so long!

The Jam Yesterday, Jam Tomorrow but never Jam today comes from a way of learning the Latin word for 'now'. In the past and future-tense the word for 'now' is IAM (with latin interchanging i and j, so the word could easily be written as jam). The present tense for 'now' is NUNC. So the rule for learning this at school was IAM (jam) tomorrow and IAM yesterday but never IAM today.
The annotated alice will make you appreciate the book a whole lot more 0 and realise just how clever it is.
PS. REALLY looking forward to the Tim Burton film - favourite director + favourite male lead + favourite book. I hope I am not to be disappointed (or should that be 'jam not to be disappointed' :-)

Hahah! This is great to see so many people who think the same way I do. I mean clearly it was scary, but I still think about when Carol Channing turns into the goat, and the jabberwocky, and the baby-pig. For awhile I'd turn it off before teh Jabberwocky part every time i watched it... which was a lot.
