Anthony Newley

He played the Mad Hatter. I didn't know this until Sunday night!

I had such a crush on him when I was sixteen, or rather, his character from Doctor Doolittle. He played an Irish guy named Matthew Mugg.

He gave me my love for Ireland (even though Anthony himself was English, not Irish. He made me love Ireland anyway.)

I miss him :(.

I admire Newley's talent and think he was very underrated but the 'Orish' accent In Doc Dolittle is pure Hollywood... Newley shot a lot of Mr Quilp at Ardmore studios in the mid '70's so perhaps his Irish accent improved after that!

I miss him too. He was great in "Scrooge: The Musical." The biggest surprise to me, however, is that he has recorded several songs from "Fiddler on the Roof," including "If I Were A Rich Man."

I checked it out, to see how well he could do a Jewish (technically Russian/Jewish) accent. He ~does~ lean slightly towards the "New York/New Jersey Jewish Accent" that is often common today, as opposed to a less region-defining accent. Still, all things considered, I think he deserves props for doing as great a job as he did! I mean, the part of "Tevye" from "Fiddler" is worlds away from his usual accent.

Along with Jayne Meadows, as the Queen of Hearts, Anthony's performance was the best part of the first half of this mini-series.

I loved him but Martin Short and Johnny Depp are best.
