Did I get this movie correctly?

I saw this movie a few years ago and didn't quite get it. But here is what I come up with. How close am I???

Agnes is a nun very naive and a bit mentally off after an abusive childhood. She gives birth and kills the baby with the help of the head nun who tries to cover it up. The cops find out and treat it as a homicide.

Agnes is screwed up in the head and believes she is Mary #2 and had a virgin birth which Jane Fonda knows is bs.

What really happened is that Agnes was raped in the barn and had the baby the old fashion way but can't come to grip with it. She doesn't know about sex but think the feelings she felt were a religious thing when really she was just getting off.

The end.

sounds fine to me. thanks for saying it straight.

and how do you explain the stigmata scene that she had while under hypnotism?

"I used to love her but I had to kill her"

reply

sure no way to explain that. what bothered me the most was that the so called 'scientist' was only interested in finding out what happened in an alleged tale told by Agnes rather than what she saw right in front of her eyes where she starts bleeding through her palms. is this such a common occurrence that she did not even get slightly curious about?

reply

"sure no way to explain that."

I think there are dozens of ways to explain the "stigmata." But we weren't allowed to see the events clearly on purpose. It's left ambiguous, but it certainly isn't inexplicable.

I just watched it and all of that is correct except they never say who she had sex with.

Did I miss something?

They left it open ended as in maybe miracles really do happen because there really was no explanation. If there was a man, Agnes would have recalled it like with everything else under hypnosis. In the end though we know that even the stern doctor psychiatrist isn't sure and left it as a possibility to her innocence of soul. And the head nun had nothing to do with the murder. It's one of the reasons why I love this movie so much; it isn't wrapped all up in a neat box; that obviously even the filmmaker left it up for discussion. It's very rare nowadays.
