no OSCAR nomnation for FONDA?!

that's just wrong! Fonda deserves one as much as Bancroft

reply

Actually, Meg Tilly acted circles around Hanoi Jane. Jane played herself, and Meg became Agnes. I don't think an actor should receive an oscar for playing themself. It was one of the great crimes ever that Meg didn't get noticed for her role. I believe this lack of notice led Meg to give up acting.

"Actually, Meg Tilly acted circles around Hanoi Jane"

I couldn't agree more.
To me, Jane is like Ted Danson, they play the same character in every role which leads me to believe that they aren't acting at all, but playing themselves.
Everytime she opens her mouth, I can't wait for her dialouge to end.
Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly were superb.

I don't know that Fonda played herself, but for certain she had the easiest role to play. I thought she was very good, but her part is easy to sympathize with and to understand. Meg Tilly and Anne Bancroft's parts, on the other hand, are much more challenging, and that may have had something to do with the fact that they and not Fonda were nominated.

And Meg Tilly was hardly unrecognized. She did win the Golden Globe, after all.

I totally agree. Jane gave a brilliant performance and deserved a nomination. I also think (though this means nothing) that Jane NEVER looked lovelier in a movie, with the possible exception of Sunday in New York.

No way. It would have put Jane in competition with Anne Bancroft, who acted rings around Jane in this movie. (And I'm a Jane Fonda idolator. )

And the Academy couldn't bump Jane back to Best Supporting Actress (like Vanessa Redgrave in Julia) or she'd have been in competition with Meg Tilly. This was just one of those movies with three superb female performances and only room for two nominations, unless two of them were going to wind up competing with each other.

Ilove anne bancroft but thought geraldine Page whomI was lucky enough to see in this role on Broadway, owned that role

Meg Tilly deserves an Oscar for this performance. It was an excellent movie and if anyone deserves an Oscar, it's Agnes.

Fonda and Bancroft played off each other brilliantly and both were worthy of nominations.

I think it was because Fonda looked like herself and Bancroft was dressed in a nuns costume that people seem to think Bancroft was better.

reply

Tilly alone deserved the nom. Love Fonda but her break down outside the file room was dumb. Bancroft was not oscar worthy but good.

it wasn't something we hadn't already seen from fonda, nor was it nearly to the level of her greatest performances (was still brilliant). mainly though, it was a VERY strong year for best actress. personally i'd prefer glenn close being nominated for "jagged edge" or "maxie" than jane, though all three performances trump streep's mannered performance in "out of africa".

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

'it wasn't something we hadn't already seen from fonda, nor was it nearly to the level of her greatest performances (was still brilliant)'.

If it wasn't "nearly" at he same level of her other performances, how was it brilliant? Brilliant would mean it was great and exceptional.

reply

I fully agree: Jane Fonda was just brilliant, as usual, and deserved to be nominated.

I think Fonda was great and deserved a nomination. She had some great scenes with everyone. Tilly, Bancroft, the actress who played her mother. She was excellent and I can't imagine her nominaiton the next year for the potboiler The Morning After wasn't partly because of not being nominated for Agnes of God! I mean why The Morning After? She is good in that but not Agnes of God good. The role in AOG is a part of her specialty but she is so good!

reply

Unfortunately, I haven't seen The Morning After yet, though I'd love to. But a new copy on DVD is currently costing over $30 on Amazon. However, I utterly agree about how grand Jane was in "Agnes of God", as well as the other two lead actresses in it. Actually, I love Jane in anything, and I would nominate her for anything she has ever done. I find her to be extremely gifted.

Jane Fonda had already been honored twice in the 70's and her role in 'AGNES OF GOD', wasn't really that exceptional. She and Bancroft brought their star quality names to the marquee of this production and it helped sell the picture. Neither in my opinion really gave oscar® worthy performances.....they both brought much of themselves to the roles.

Fonda looked phoney smoking her fake cigarettes and her performance came over just as false. I saw a popular actress, acting out a mannered performance of a psychiatrist and not coming over that convincing in the role. Bancroft probably fared better, but didn't really give that much of a revealing performance; only in the aspect of her characters intentions and situation narrative wise.

Meg Tilly—hidden behind her habit—gave quite a radiant and natural performance and was the most deserving of her oscar® nomination. I found her quite impressive in 'PSYCHO 2' a couple of years earlier and is an asset to that film as well.
