Throwaway Line or clever way to cover

After many years of watching this show, a thought hit me on something here.

In both the first and ghost ship episodes when the ghosts escape they take a combined form when they escape. But in the last episode there was none when Simbooroo opens the chest only three random generic ghosts....WTF...

But then it hit me. At the very start Vincent says they are on this show to lure out the demon that's been eluding them......what if this was a clever way of writing in all the strangeness.

Since in the episode all we see Simbooroo do is send other ghosts/zombies after the gang, are those three ones that got boxed in the process?

Also there's this big whole plotline of opening the chest on the winter solstice and getting all the power, yet when Simbooroo opens the chest, the old ghosts don't get out and he is easily sucked up by a vaccuum.

So what if all that was a ruse just to get the cowardly lion demon that never did his own dirty work out in the open all along. Was VVG just being a coy in that line or was the whole episode really just an checkmate to trick Simbooroo?

This show made lots of jokes and takes even at itself, and this episode just seems weird if taken straight, but if one assumes it's a trap all the weirdness becomes explainable and coverable. (Why not new combined form, why an ultimate power is easily defeated, why three random ghosts, etc) Normally I'd accuse myself of overthinking things, but on a show like this I'm not entirely convinced.
