Hugh Beaumont died a few years before, and was dead on the show, in fact there were several episodes that ended with June visiting his grave telling him what was going on with the family.

Uncle Billy wasn't shown in the new series. Aunt Martha's death was the subject of one of the episodes of the new series: "A Part of Life".

Hugh Beaumont died in 1982.

Did Ward die before Wally and Beaver had kids or after?

reply

I have seen the (hard to find) Made for TV movie of the Still the Beaver which aired sometime in 1983. It was more of a depressing drama which began showing Theodore returning to his hometown with his two boys due to his divorce and shortly after his fathers passing. I remember the song by Supertramp "Take the Long Way Home" playing during the beginning. At the shows end Sue Ellen gives birth to a baby girl which would be Wally's first child.

To answer your question Ward would have been alive when Beaver's kids were born but not Wally's

reply

Wally must have waited a long time to have kids. Also, why was Wally's daughter Kelly so old on the series from 1985-1989, but just born at the end of the 1983 tv movie?

reply

From what I remember from the movie is that Wally and Mary Ellen tried to have a baby, and never could (which would answer the part about waiting so long). As to why Kelly was aged is probably because when they decided to make it a series, by aging her to be around the same as Oliver, it would give more storylines to the two of them getting into trouble together, as opposed to Oliver getting into trouble and seeing Wally and Mary Ellen toting around an infant and toddler, same reason as why when they had Kevin, he was a baby in the first season (that he was born in, like the third season, I think) and then suddenly for the next he was about four. It's that rapid aging syndrome that tv children, especially soap opera children, go through.

Did they ever say how Ward died? Was it just old age?

Hey, the same could be asked of other sitcoms. Family Ties and Growing Pains, for examples. They do the "add-a-kid" thing to boost ratings. First season the kid is a babe in arms. Next season the kid is five years old getting ready for the first day of school. I believe the only sitcom that didn't pull that is Full House. Baby Michelle literally grew up on the show.

I just watched a VHS tape I hade made of 'Still The Beaver', and at the end Wally & Mary Ellen had a baby boy named Ward.

reply

They had a baby, but it wasn't a boy named Ward.

The kids, except Kevin, looked older. So, I assumed after they were born. And June Cleaver chose not to get re-married.

reply

Hugh Beaumont who played Ward died a year before the reunion show aired so the character was "killed off". Throughout the episode we see June sitting at his grave talking to him using her classic line "Ward I'm so worried about the Beaver"

Hugh Beaumont died in 1982. From what I can remember of the movie, his character Ward Cleaver lived from 1910 to 1970. He was 60 years old.

Actually, they had Ward Cleaver die in 1977.
