Do I need to watch series before movies?

Hey,

I really want to watch this series...
But TV series isn't on DVD yet :(
I can purchase the movie collection, but should I watch the TV series first?
Do I need the character development or backstory from the series??

Cheers

It's been a while since I have seen the series or the movies. However, I would say you do not have to watch the series first. There may be minor mentions to the series, but I don't remember anything significant. The movies were done in a different style than the series anyway. The music is different, and since they are individual movies and not a continuing series, the pacing is different. IMO, while they use the same characters, the movies are sort of separate from the series. In some ways, I think they follow the style of the novels, especially since the author, Robt. B. Parker was involved in production on some, if not all, the movies. Parker was not involved in the development of the series. He was merely mentioned as the author of the novels the series was based on.

Just a side note, different actresses portray Susan Silverman in the movies than in the series.

You certainly don't need to watch the Urich t.v. series before seeing the Mantegna movies. However, my recommendation is to read some of the novels. They are truly exceptional. Neither Urich nor Mantegna do full justice to the witty, wisecracking, well-read character that Parker puts on the pages.
