David Dukes - Martin Scorcella / Leopold Strabismus character?

I just finished watching the series again and was wondering what the purpose of the Martin Scorcella/Leopold Strabismus character was? He seemed to serve no real purpose in advancing the plotline. He milks some money from the Senator's wife and later he marries the Senator's daughter, but he really has nothing at all to do with space exploration.

I wondered too, when I saw the original. Now nearly 20 years later my mature answer is: He represents the fakes and charlatans who swarm the periphery of all human endeavors and profit while contributing nothing of value. For example, the media.

In addition, the story, as related in Michener's novel, was focused on the four men and their families: Grant (senator), Mott (scientist), Kolff (engineer) and Pope (astronaut). Strabismus had a significant impact on Grant's wife and daughter.

Also, at least in the book, Strabismus's fake university actually helps NASA. They buy fake doctoral degrees from Strabismus for some of their personnel, such as Kolff, so that they will be given more credibility by Congress. That seems silly, but it's part of the story.

You got your mind right, Luke?

Sorry for bringing this back to life, although reading these makes me want to dig out my copy and watch. I too didn't think his story line added much to the overall theme of the space program. I have not read Michener's novel, so I can't comment on Leopould S's character within that medium. I do however agree that he represented those who perhaps profited from being a naysayer or antagonist to the space program. He did in fact get rich as was portrayed with the mini series.
I wish I had a complete copy, despite what others may say, the station break tie ins confirm I have a truncated copy.
On another note, I acquired a laserdisc copy of the pilot for Call to Glory starring Craig T Nelson. I don't believe the series has been released other than on vhs. I recommend it!
