Episode Question - Jamie's Book Report

Does anyone remember the episode in which Jamie has to do a book report? I feel like he started off reading _Moby Dick_ and then didn't actually do the work for it and got in trouble. I have a vague memory that his mother may have been substitute teaching for his class, so he thought he could get away with not doing the work. (Or maybe, was she always his teacher?) He switched books to some sort of mystery and wound up making a film noir video of the book. A lot of the kids from his class as well as his family were in the video. He played it in class, but he cut it before it ended and turned to the class and said, "Do you want to know how it ends? . . . Read the book."

I was just a little younger than the child actors/characters when this aired, and it drove me crazy because I wanted to know how the mystery ended. Of course, this many years later I don't remember what the mystery was, but I would still like to find out if the book on which he was "reporting" was an actual book and something that I could read now. It bugged me enough at the time that I still remember this many years later that I never found out the answer.

Could anyone tell me 1. if it was a real book and 2. what the name of it was?

And as a sidebar: I was convinced I was a robot for the longest time because of this show! :) I tend to get a little too involved in the plots of shows and movies than is good for me; my questions and my comments should be evidence enough of this. :)

It is just bizarre that this show convinced you that you were a robot. Why is this the case?

I thought that the lines on my hands were evidence that I had been sewn together. I had an overactive imagination as a child (still do, really) and was convinced at various times that I was adopted (which I assume is quite common), that my mother could hear all my thoughts, and that if I sat as still as I could while riding in the car that people would think I was a statue. It never occured to me that Vicki was aware she was a robot and that I never needed any repairs as she always did. I realize it makes no sense, but . . . it's just the way I thought back then.

The really strange part was that the male neighbor is a very close friend of the family. Even though I knew the show wasn't real because Bill was an actor and the rest of them were, I was still convinced there was something I wasn't being told.

The book was called Rick Savage, Private Eye. I doubt it's a real book, but it's a parody that i've noticed copied a lot. Step by Step, Married With Children, and Family Matters messed with the same type of plot.

As for how it ends, it's hard to say because "Trouble" walked into Rick's office and said "somebody's trying to kill me." In other versions, like Family Matters, the girl says, "Somebody's trying to kill my Aunt."

So anyway, in both Married with Children AND Family Matters, the killer was actually the girl who walked in and asked for help in the first place. As for the Small Wonder version it's kinda hard to say 'cuz "Trouble" died.

Ok I'll stop rambling now :)
