What's with all the Brummie accents?

Adrian Mole lives in Leicester not Birmingham, so why did so many cast members talk with Brummie accents? Even the actors who were from a different part of England (like Stephen Moore and Steven Mackintosh) spoke Brum! It was like The Grimleys! I know Leicester is still in the Midlands, by my friend from there says the only people there with Brummie accents (one of the worst accents in the country IMHO) are the ones that moved there from Birmingham.

East midlands accents are less identifiable (and mimicable) hence the series being Birmingham-ified.

I thought this was strange too but I guess it makes sense. Wasn't Julie Walters playing a scouser though?

It was noted at the time as to if the series was set in Leicester, why there were so many Brummie accents.
