Question about Sony's involvement

This question is for those that really understand the deal that Sony has made regarding Robotech last year. No guesses please.

Did Sony only purchase live action film rights or the rights to the whole Robotech franchise as well?

I ask because the article at Variety doesn't make it so clear since their wording ("Sony Pictures has secured rights to the popular anime series “Robotech” and views the project as a potential film franchise.") seems to be very vague.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I don't have any information, but was this inspired by the really strange rights issues that prevented a US release of "Super Dimension Forress Macross" in its original format for so long? I recall it implied that the Robotech people for some reason did not have the rights to release Macross and the other series in their original formats.

One way to tell in the future- find any news release and look for a name of whatever company that is associated with the production. If they say Harmony Gold it will probably be Robotech as a whole. If it says a Japanese production company it might be that they only have the rights for Macross.

I never watched too much Robotech- I only read the novels, saw a few episodes, and when I figured out how Robotech was made I knew all of the material bridging the "generations" was invented for the books and would not be present in the show and thus would not work as well. So I lost interest in the Macek creation. I would prefer an adaptation of G1/Macross but drop the Robotech Masters and Invid. They might be able to do that if they have the rights for all of Robotech. They probably would not be able to make Protoculture like it was in Macross(a civilization as opposed to an energy source)

I would not be terribly shocked to find out they only have the rights for Robotech. Are you asking this because you are hoping the rights will allow for the original races of "Rick" and "Lisa?" With the weird rights issues I could foresee them being forced to use Rick Hunter instead of Hikaru Ichijo. Knowing James Wan he might fight for an Asian lead- he usually puts at least one Asian actor in a role that doesn't require it and coming off of Fast 7 his clout is at a zenith.

I would prefer Hikaru/Lisa, since AM/WF pairings are rare. Again, sorry I have no information.

Perhaps they could portray Rick Hunter as being of ethnically mixed heritage (the original plan was for his dub name to be "Rick Yamada" but somehow that fell through).

Sorry for going off topic.
