Why Robotech LAM will fail.

The core of Robotech is the concept of Robotechnology as first espoused by Roy Fokker when he's trying to relate it to Rick in the first episode. "You don't just think it, you live it". Instead whatever the film makers will show is transformer robots and explosions. They do not understand the soul of Robotech.

Well personally I don't think the live-action film will be made. That is I'll believe it when I see it. And that's not taking into account legal matters over the shows that made up ROBOTECH. "Macross" would clearly be the best series to adapt, but that's probably not gonna happen.

I think if they improved and expanded on the script for ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE (1986), and turned that into the live-action film, it could probably work out pretty well. It may be spliced from two different shows, but I've seen MEGAZONE 23 PART 1, and it's a very different film.

I very much agree with your sentiment. If this is made into a live action movie it will probably be on par with the Michael Bay Transformers films. So, if I can be 100% honest I really hope that it is never made into a film-EVER!

Although if you watch the first episode of Macross, it is filled with explosions!

reply

Yes, but there was a very deep story line that ran through the entire series. None of the explosions were for the sake of explosions. That is a concept that Mr. Bay is yet to grasp.

reply

Yeah Michael Bay sucks.

I have actually heard that the Benghazi movie was good, but I haven't seen it. Although I am not sure if he directed it or if he just produced it. Still, I probably won't watch it for the same reasons that I never watched any of the movies about September eleventh. I just can't stand Hollywood making money off of that type of stuff, because it's completely obvious that they could give a rats ass as to what happened to any of those people. Those movies were just made to make money. Sorry for my little rant there... Anyway, yeah, Bay sucks and I really hope that this movie is never made. The Transformers movies, The Star Wars prequels (even the new one sucked IMHO. I actually walked out midway through the film because I was so disappointed in it), The GI Joe movies and The Dungeons and Dragons movies were all terrible and soured my love of those franchises for a long long time. I'd hate for that to happen with Robotech. It's pretty much the reason that I have sworn off seeing anymore prequels, sequels (including sequels to 20 and 30 year old movies), reboots, remakes, re-imaginings and superhero movies... what does that leave me with? Not a whole heck of a lot.

And just to let you know the reason that I saw the new Star Wars movie was because it was the last film that was played at the Ziegfeld theater in New York City before it closed its doors forever. I went to see the theater- not the movie. That's why I had no problem walking out on that hunk of crap. End of rant number two.

I worry that a live action movie adaptation of Robotech will focus too much on action and special effects and neglect the human drama. A major part of Robotech was its soap opera elements, with some episodes focusing more on the characters' personal lives than action sequences. Robotech was also ambivalent in its attitudes towards war. The enemy was humanized, with some former foes becoming allies. The series showed the devastating cost of war, and while The Macross Saga ultimately made the point that fighting is sometimes necessary to protect the innocent, characters had their doubts that the war was worth it.
