Did you ever find the series on tape, or even better on DVD anywhere? I have been looking but all I can find is in british format which doesn't play on my DVD.

reply

Yes, WHERE is everybody.
This was probably one of the best mini-series ever made.
Why haven't the current owners of this material ever made it available is a mystery .......... probably Dysney is only interested in inane cartoons, etc;
We should write to them

Disney has always been funny about the way they release VHS/DVDs. I think they like to wait until demand builds up so they can charge a ridiculous price for them. Then they pull them back off the market and wait a few years (sometimes 10 or 15) before releasing them again.

My guess is that there is not enough demand for them. If you look at the petition that someone keeps promoting elsewhere on this forum, it is several years old and there are fewer than 800 signatures. They would probably required demand in excess of 50,000 before they would sink the money into remastering and redistributing it.

It's a pain, I know. I'd love to see it come to DVD too. But realistically it think the only way you are ever going to get it is to buy a pirated copy.

It was released on DVD this year by Network DVD in the UK. It seems the only way to get it is by ordering direct from them here:

I am also currently looking for the series on tape and have just recently won the first 6 episodes on VHS, I have not received them yet but look forward to. Someone mentioned that they found it in British format? I was just wondering if I could have more information on that because I know of someone that can convert the different formats. If anyone has the last 4 episodes please let me know. Thank you!

I have all the episodes on VHS...they are old, but I don't think we had a VCR in 1986 so I'm guessing it was a later airing. Anyway, seeing this board makes me wanna go watch them again. :)

What would really be great is if the DVD extras included some interviews or commentary from some of the actors like Christopher Guard (Jim Hawkins), Donald Pickering (Hallows), Kenneth Colley (Ben Gunn), Deborah Poplett (Isabella), Reiner Schöne (Van Der Breken), Artro Morris (Rev Morgan) and of course Brian Blessed (Silver). I bet they'd have some really interesting stories about making this show, and considering it is one of the greatest shows made for tv, I can only imagine what kind of experience it was for the talent involved.

I remember watching this series in the late 80's. I "think" it was either before the series debut or right before episode 10 that they actually showed a "behind-the-scenes" or "the make of" for "Return to Treasure Island". I would love to see this added into the bonus material of the DVD. The one segment I remember is talking about Blessing working fight scenes with only one leg. It was an incredible special and showed many shots of what happened on the set between takes and some very in-depth interviews.

I believe a myriad of people in the USA would love to have this film on DVD if they only knew of its' existence. How can we communicate our desire to have it aired or marketed for purchase?

reply

I have waited long enough. What can we do to have someone release this series on DVD in the US? Signed a petition years ago, left message with IMDb. All to no avail. Our kids are missing the awe and excitement of this film.

My best suggestion is to go somewhere online and buy a good Region Free DVD players. This would allow you to play any DVDs from anywherein the world on a U.S. TV. I did this myself and have not regretted it, as there are many things never released in the U.S. at all or are chopped up versions.

I have purchased several RF players from www.220-electronics.com over the last several years. They have some pretty good players.
