One major mistake this show (which I loved) made...

...was abandoning the original set/locale that appeared in the two-part pilot.

The design of the place borrowed heavily from The Prisoner, but when I saw this as a kid I hadn't seen The Prisoner, so it was all new and exciting to me.

Ultra-modern cards, underground tunnels, weirdly generic foods, the idea of a race of androids--it was all quite compelling and fascinating.

The later episodes, when the family found themselves in very ordinary-looking settings, suffered by comparison. Only the episode focussing on Jonna Lee's character brought back some of the compelling surrealism of the two-part pilot.

It was a great, great, great pilot show, but the rest of the series suffered, and one of the main reasons was departing from the fascinating, surreal city where they began.

I agree. i guess the studio had to save money and to constantly make all those props and sets would have been expensive, and if ratings aren't high enough then there is no way to justify the cost.

I loved the first episode too. All that strangeness added up to a cool concept. However one of the things CBS brought the Taylors on for was the concept that in the "Otherworld" of Thel the societies varied so much from province to province that the family could encounter something strange, alien and different enough to test their family bonds in each episode. Had the series continued things could have turned really fantastic as they got closer and closer to Imar. I know that Rod Taylor wanted to have established scifi writers coming on to the writing staff to create really otherworldly situations for the Sterlings to find themselves in. It is a shame it lasted for not even a full season. Personally I would love to see the series revived as perhaps a web series or maybe a low budget greenscreen series like Sanctuary.

Thousands die every day for no reason at all, where's your bleeding heart for them?
