We were still a young nation...

Innocent, full of hope and promise.
But it was also a nation in turmoil, divided by two different ways of life.
The North: A beacon of industry and progress.
The South: Steeped in a proud tradition of honor (but bound to a cruel institution).
Orry Main and George Hazard, two friends bound together by loyalty, separated by heritage.
Their friendship is put to the test by a changing world.
Robert Mitchum, Elizabeth Taylor, Hal Holbrook, Gene Kelly, Genie Francis, John Stockwell, Lewis Smith, Jean Simmons, Inga Swenson, Terri Garber, Philip Casnoff, David Carradine, Kirstie Alley, Lesley Anne-Down, James Read, and Patrick Swayze in this adaptation of John Jakes' unforgettable drama of Love and War...

You are STILL a young nation. With an incredibly naive and even moronic view of the rest of the world. Grow up already!

The United Kingdom isn't much older - it was only created in 1707.

To be sure, no nation is truly old. All nations are a mailable melting pot of different ideas and traditions. You look at one of the oldest 'nations' on the planet (Iran, which can sorta trace it's history back to Persia), and I'm pretty sure an ancient Persian wouldn't recognise the 'traditions' or 'national identity' of Iran. In 200 years time, a time traveling Iranian from 2016 wouldn't recognise the 'traditions' or 'national identity' of whatever will be Iran in 200 years time!
