Virgilia's marriage

Do you think Virgilia married Grady out of love for him or did she want to make a statement about equality.

reply

Both. But she seemed a tad on the crazy side...

I'd say it was a statement, or came across so because Kirstie Alley and the guy who played Grady had no chemistry whatsoever.

Hindsight being what it is, I think she CLEARLY loved him, no question. She chose him over her family. She struggled in poverty for him. The way she grieved his death. She saw Grady as a man, even if the world they lived in (Dred Scott Decision) did not.

As far as "making a statement about equality," I think it was just in her nature to do so. She wasn't about to apologize for being with him.

She was *beep* crazy. She only married him to make a statement, although the idea of being with a black slave was probably also a turn on for her. She didn't love him and I doubt Grady loved her. He only used her for his own cause.
