Does anybody know the band, and whether it is actually a song or just a TV tune??

reply

The Theme song was written/performed by Domenic Troiano.

He used to be a member of The James Gang and also played with The Guess Who.

He's released some albums.

I remember reading back in the Eighties that there was talk about releasing the theme as a single. Does anyone know if they actually did it or not?

I was just now listening to some Dire Straits, 'Planet of new Orleans'. It reminded me of the Night Heat theme and I came looking for it.

This tune did a lot for the show, it really set the mood. Thinking now I'd have to nominate it as one of the best themes of any show in how it played so well to the theme, or vice versa. I was never even a huge fan of the series but it had such an unforgettable feel thanks to the opening tune and its use throughout (was it in the end its played again with the narration?)

If anybody knows where to track it down please post here and I'll do the same.

When Tommy is talking at the end of the episode, the theme is played in a jazzy sax version. Some of the later episodes would play the song with the rest of the lyrics being sung. I was a big fan of the show, especially the six eps they showed in prime time.

I've found the opening theme in a grainy wav format and coverted it to an mp3. It's not great but if anyone wants it, email me at [email protected]

I'd really like to find the jazzy Tom Article narrative conclusion music if anyone can point me in the right direction for that.

UPDATE 12/26/08

I went on the site now and the video is off. If anyone knows where it can be seen, let me know. I ***REALLY*** like the theme song. :(

As a teen I recorded music from the radio, you know, using casette tape...
I have the song on tape, but I still can't find the music on mp3.
So, again, if anybody knows....

(by the way, imdb says the song is performed by B.J. Cook, so I guess that is wrong?)

One drop of ink can make millions think!

There are a couple of YouTube videos of the theme song. One states that it was done by Dominic Troiano:

For the longest time, I thought this was a song used during commercials for "In the Heat of the Night" and finally found a single web site using lyrics that differentiated themselves from that theme song to find "Night Heat". Quite the chance in that! I will investigate this further as I've waited patiently to get this far.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think.

UPDATE: I just recorded the song, so if the link goes down, email me and I'll be happy to send a copy.

Quite good! You can definitely tell that was performed in the Eighties! My only complaint is that there were no shots of my crush from the show, Det. Christine Meadows (Laura Robinson). BTW, do you know who that woman in the leather top was? Her pic comes up at about the 2:25 point.
