What kind of comment was that?

Just had the first DVD, entered the site as I always do, and what do I see? The following comment;

difficult to watch, 19 July 2005

Author: planktonrules from Bradenton, Florida

It is not surprising that the life of Il Duce is depressing and awful--he was a brutal, evil little man after all. However, after watching it I was kind of wondering WHO the intended audience was. After all, you might have noticed that many of the worst monsters of the 20th century have been so rarely portrayed on film. While there have been a few films that talk about Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin and Pot Pot, the lives of such evil men are rarely the sole focus of movies. Probably because the public has no interest in finding out about the real-life stories of these men--we ALL know they are scum! Instead, this has been more the domain of documentaries on the History Channel--and I think that's where these characters should remain. I don't want to see them humanized or explore their motivation (except perhaps in a psychological/sociological sense). And this is the heart of the problem with this movie. Benito Mussolini was scum--he cheated on his wife, was violent to those around him and was an inflated blow-hard. Not exactly something I want to see on the big screen or in a TV movie.

Never been so much disturbed by a comment in my life. And I mean it. What do u think about it?

My first response when I read the comment was that despite his belief that those types of movies are not made, I can think of two about Hitler that sprung immediately to mind, one about his early days and the "Downfall" which was about the end. I'm sure that there are others both about Hitler and some of the others. "The Last King of Scotland" should be coming out shortly, I've heard good things about this one as well.

My thoughts are that whoever wrote that should only stay away from any film about history - and any book too, for there are so many disturbing things to see there ...

Well, led by Mussolini and the fascists, Italy:
abolished free press, allowed only fascist press
had political opponents killed
forced italianization on minors
persecuted Jews
established concentration camps
invaded to other countries
used mustard gas in Abessinia
massacred civilians in Greece
etc.
etc.

The fact that Mussolini was not as bad as Hitler doesn't change the fact he was bad, especially as it is hard to top Hitler (with only someone like Pol Pot standing next to him). He sided with the corporations and landowners in grinding the people into the dust and carried out a reign of terror on the very people he claimed to stand for (the Italian people) and the people of other countries he invaded. He ruined their economy with his ''heroic capitalism'' and create one of the worst ideologies in history (Fascism), which has a brother in modern Neo-Liberalism.
