They had some pretty crazy "very special episodes" in the 80s, and that was one of the most memorable. Luckily Wesley was totally fine by the end of the episode and it was never talked about again.
shareI have wondered how much "the very special episodes" of this era impacted me. Sometimes I think, "man, they really traumatized some of us kids!" On the other hand, they raised awareness for some tough issues. Ehh, I'll assume I am aa well-adjusted (or not well-adjusted) as I'd be regardless of these sitcoms.
I do remember thinking after an episode ended and new ones aired, "are we supposed to pretend that never happened?!" Even at a young age, I didn't know how to reconcile sitcoms having no continuity when a serious subject so greatly impacted a character just one week before. Oh, those kooky, kooky 80s!
